Selling returns to bourse, KSE-100 sheds over 1,300 points

Selling returns to bourse, KSE-100 sheds over 1,300 points

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) observed yet another volatile trading session, as the benchmark KSE-100 lost over 1,300 points on Wednesday. Trading opened on a negative note with the KSE-100 seeing a sharp dip amid immediate selling pressure, dragging the benchmark index to an intraday low of 154,790.73. However, the market made a strong comeback by mid-morning, pushing the KSE-100 towards an intraday high of 157,962.47. Selling pressure resumed by early afternoon, dragging the benchmark index lower. At close, the KSE-100 Index settled at 155,777.21, down by 1,354.88 points or 0.86%. “Overall sentiment remained fragile amid escalating geopolitical tensions, which dampened global risk appetite,” said Topline Securities in a note. The brokerage house shared that the local bourse followed the regional Asian markets, which largely traded in the red, mirroring the broader risk-off environment. “On the other hand, the Exploration & Production (E&P) sector outperformed the broader market, as international oil prices moved higher in response to the ongoing conflict, lending support to energy stocks,” it added. Index-heavy constituents—including ENGROH, UBL, NBP, HBL, and LUCK—emerged as key laggards, collectively dragging the index down by 891 points during the session, said Topline. On Tuesday, PSX staged a powerful and confidence-restoring rebound as aggressive value buying in heavyweight sectors helped the PSX recover sharply from the previous session’s historic rout, signalling a decisive shift in market sentiment from panic to opportunity. The benchmark KSE-100 Index climbed 5,159.10 points or 3.39% to close at 157,132.10 points. Internationally, Asian markets skidded on Wednesday, with investors cutting crowded positions in gold and chipmakers on worries a wider Mideast war could deliver an energy shock that raises inflation and delays rate cuts. Shares in Seoul dived 4% to take two-day losses beyond 11% as ‌fast-money and foreigners bailed out of a market that had soared on memory chipmakers’ vast AI-driven profits. The selloff dragged the won to a 17-year low. Japan’s Nikkei slid 2.5% in a third straight session of losses. Japan and South Korea are major energy importers. Benchmark Brent crude oil futures are up more than 12% for the week at $81.40 a barrel, though they came off highs after US President Donald Trump ordered an insurance guarantee on Gulf shipping and said the navy may escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary. US and Israeli forces have pounded Iran for four days, and Iranian drones and missiles have struck Gulf oil refineries and also US embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. On Wall Street, indexes pared their earlier losses, but the S&P 500 closed 0.8% lower amid fears of potentially prolonged higher oil prices. Volume on the all-share index declined to 622.69 million from 770.69 million recorded in the previous close. The value of shares decreased to Rs29.95 billion from Rs44.36 billion in the previous session. Unity Foods Ltd was the volume leader with 117.21 million shares, followed by K-Electric Ltd. with 64.94 million shares, and Trust Sec. & Bro.(R) with 56.76 million shares. Shares of 479 companies were traded on Wednesday, of which 201 registered an increase, 213 recorded a fall, and 65 remained unchanged. [...]

Gold climbs over 1% as US-Israeli strikes on Iran fuel safe‑haven demand

Gold prices rose over 1% on Wednesday, rebounding from a more ‌than one-week low hit in the previous session, as escalating US-Israeli air strikes against Iran and heightened geopolitical uncertainty supported safe-haven demand. Spot gold gained 1.6% to $5,168.69 per ounce as of 0249 GMT. US gold futures for April delivery added 1.1% to $5,178.40. On Tuesday, bullion fell more than 4% to its lowest since February 20, weighed by a firmer dollar and dimming rate-cut prospects as inflation concerns were intensified by fears of a potentially prolonged Middle East conflict. “I think for gold to shrug this off over the course of a number of days wouldn’t be surprising because it has tended into its own narrative and has been resilient despite whatever the dollar is doing, despite what yields have been doing since the beginning of last year,” said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive. Global oil and gas prices surged as the US-Israeli war on Iran halted energy exports from the Middle East, ‌with Tehran attacking ships and energy facilities, closing navigation in the Gulf and forcing production stoppages from Qatar to Iraq. Global stock markets slid as the disruption of Middle East energy supplies exacerbated investor concerns about inflation. “Higher oil prices as a result of escalating geopolitical tensions in Iran added to inflationary concerns and complicated the outlook for monetary easing,” said Christopher Wong, a strategist at OCBC. Investors expect the US Federal Reserve to hold rates at the end of its next two-day meeting on March 18, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. “The underlying fundamentals (for gold) have not materially shifted. Structural drivers such as geopolitical uncertainty, policy unpredictability and portfolio diversification needs remain intact,” Wong added. Spot silver advanced 3.5% to $84.92 per ounce on Wednesday, after falling more than 8% in the last session. Spot platinum added 2.7% to $2,139.56 per ounce, while palladium gained 1.6% to $1,673.87. [...]

Oil prices rise 3% as Iran crisis disrupts Middle East supply

Oil prices rose 3% on Wednesday as the US-Israeli war on Iran disrupted Middle East supplies, but the pace of gains slowed from past sessions after President Donald Trump suggested the US Navy could escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent rose $2.67, or 3.3%, to $84.07 a barrel by 0659 GMT, after closing on Tuesday at its highest since January 2025. US West Texas Intermediate crude rose $2.24, or 3%, to $76.8, after settling at its highest since June. Both benchmarks have risen about 5% or more in the past two sessions. “The primary near-term driver for oil prices remains the US-Iran conflict,” said OANDA senior market analyst Kelvin Wong. “At this stage, only clear signs of de-escalation could mitigate or reverse the current bullish trend for WTI, and such signals are currently lacking.” Israeli and US forces struck targets across Iran on Tuesday, prompting Iranian strikes against energy infrastructure in a region that accounts for just under a third of global oil production. Iraq, the second-largest crude producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, has cut output by nearly 1.5 million barrels a day, about half its production, due to storage limits and the lack of an export route, officials told Reuters. They said the country may have to shut its nearly 3 million bpd of output within days if exports do not resume. Iran has also targeted tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flow. Traffic through the Strait remains effectively closed. Trump said the US Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait if necessary, adding that he had ordered the US International Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for maritime trade in the Gulf. “This is welcome news, but clearly it won’t happen overnight. Naval escorts would be helpful, but again, this effort will take time,” ING analysts said in a note. Some analysts were unsure if the step would limit oil’s uptrend for long. Leadership council takes over: Israel says warplanes hit Tehran again after killing Khamenei “Trump’s mitigation measures to keep the Strait of Hormuz open do not seem to have triggered a change in the ongoing bullish trend of oil prices,” OANDA’s Wong said. WTI crude had managed to hold its ground at the key short-term support level of $73.40/$70.70 a barrel, he added. Countries and companies have begun seeking alternative routes and supplies. India and Indonesia said they were looking for other energy supplies, while some Chinese refineries were shutting or moving up maintenance plans. Saudi Aramco seeks to reroute crude away from Strait of Hormuz, sources say In the United States, crude stocks rose by 5.6 million barrels last week, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures, well above the 2.3 million projected by analysts. Official figures from the US government are expected later on Wednesday. [...]

OGDCL strikes major oil & gas discovery in Kohat

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), one of Pakistan’s largest exploration and production (E&P) companies, has made significant oil and gas discoveries at its Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The listed E&P disclosed the development in its notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday. “We are pleased to inform that OGDCL, operator of Nashpa Exploration License (65% working interest), together with its joint venture partners - Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) (30%) and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) (5% carried interest) - has made an oil and gas discovery over lockhart limestone at its exploratory well Baragzai X-01 (Slant), located in District Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” read the notice. OGDCL shared that during cased-hole Drill Stem Test (DST-05) in Lockhart Limestone, the well flowed at a rate of 3,765 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and 11.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas, through a 32/64“ choke at a wellhead flowing pressure of 4,080 psig. “Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well was spud-in on December 30, 2024 as an exploratory well in the Nashpa Exploration License to test the hydrocarbon potential of Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta and Kingriali formations. “The well was successfully drilled down to a total depth of 5,170 meters into the Kingriali Formation. Based on the wireline logs evaluation, four cased hole drill stem tests were earlier conducted in Kingriali, Datta, Samana Suk + Shinawari and Hangu + Lumshiwal formations, which also resulted in oil and gas discoveries.” OGDCL shared that the latest oil and gas discovery will contribute toward mitigating the energy supply-demand gap through indigenous resources and will add to the hydrocarbon reserves base of OGDCL, its joint venture partners, and the country. China’s yuan hovers near one-month low on widening Mideast war; corporate demand limits losses

SHANGHAI: China’s yuan hovered near a one-month low against the dollar on Wednesday, pressured by a broadly stronger greenback amid a widening Middle East conflict, although losses were limited by rising corporate demand for the local currency. Israeli and US forces pounded targets across Iran, prompting Iranian attacks around the Gulf as the conflict spread to Lebanon, sent oil prices sharply higher and rattled global markets. The onshore yuan slipped to 6.9288 per dollar at one point in early trading, not far from a trough of 6.9297 hit late on Tuesday, which was the weakest level since January 9. It recovered to be trading largely flat at 6.9187 as of 0344 GMT. Its offshore counterpart was down about 0.06% in Asian trade to 6.9224 per dollar. Currency traders said recent dollar strength prompted some of their corporate clients to convert their foreign exchange revenue into the Chinese currency in morning deals, which limited the yuan’s losses. “Such FX settlement partly offset the weakness induced by the firmer dollar,” said a trader at a Chinese bank. Prior to market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set its midpoint rate at 6.9124 a dollar, 36 pips or 0.05% weaker than its previous setting, and 73 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate of 6.9051.  The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day. “Overall macro and policy outlook (is) likely to remain intact if oil prices rise only temporarily and moderately,” economists at Standard Chartered said in a note. There was little market reaction to the release of mixed manufacturing data for February. Domestic investors are shifting focus to the annual meeting of China’s parliament from Thursday, where major economic targets and the year’s policy agenda will be mapped out.  The market will be watching for any hints about potential policy ramifications from the Middle East conflict. “The war in the middle east will likely weigh on the global economy including China, at least in March,” said Zhiwei Zhang, chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management.  “I think the government’s policy stance is flexible this year. If economic (activity) slows further in coming months, I expect the government to boost investment moderately to mitigate the pressure on the economy.”  Analysts expect the National People’s Congress to show tolerance for slightly slower economic growth this year, opening the door for greater - albeit not decisive - efforts to curb industrial overcapacity and rebalance the export-reliant economy. China, HK stocks fall on Middle East worries; focus on NPC for policy cues

SHANGHAI: China, Hong Kong stocks fell on Wednesday, led by oil and maritime shipping companies, as investors remained risk-off amid the escalating Middle East conflict and turned focus to the annual parliamentary meeting due this week for policy signals. Worries that a wider conflict could trigger an energy shock, lift inflation and delay rate cuts weighed on sentiment in Asia. By the lunch break, the blue-chip CSI300 Index fell 1.6%, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.4%. Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng shed 2.8% to a six-month low. Onshore selling was led by oil, maritime transport and port stocks. The CSI Oil and Gas Industry Index dropped 3.3% after China Petroleum & Chemical, CNOOC and PetroChina issued abnormal-trading notices following more than 20% gains over the past three sessions; the firms said operations are normal and cautioned on geopolitical uncertainty in crude prices. Nanjing Port and Ningbo Marine each fell nearly 10%. “Geopolitical risks remain unclear and A-shares are in a catch-up decline. In a high-volume downswing, investors should avoid rushing to bottom-fish and watch developments in the conflicts and annual parliamentary meeting for possible policy signals,” analysts at Huatai Futures said in a note. The country’s top leadership will publish its annual government work report and budget plans at the opening session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s rubber-stamp parliament, on Thursday, as well as the outline of its 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, a sweeping blueprint that sets priorities for industrial policy. “We expect Beijing to lower the 2026 GDP growth target slightly to 4.5%-5.0% from around 5.0% in 2025,” said Ting Lu, chief China economist at Nomura. He added that Beijing is likely to keep the official fiscal deficit at 4.0% of GDP and lift net financing of off-budget ultra-long central government special bonds to 1.6 trillion yuan ($231.29 billion) and local government special bonds to 4.8 trillion yuan, from 1.3 trillion and 4.4 trillion, respectively, announced in March 2025. Gains elsewhere helped limit losses. The CSI Defense Index rebounded about 1% after a sharp selloff in the previous session, and the CSI Rare Earth Index climbed nearly 1%. In Hong Kong, financials led declines, falling 3.6%, while tech majors slid 2%, extending losses for a third session. An official survey showed China’s manufacturing activity contracted for a second month in February, underscoring pressure on factory margins as weak domestic demand and investment offset resilient exports. Hormuz shutdown could force Iraq, Kuwait to curb oil output within days, JP Morgan says

Crude oil supplies from Iraq and Kuwait could start shutting in within days if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, potentially cutting 3.3 million barrels ‌per day (bpd) by day eight of the Middle East conflict, J.P. Morgan analysts said in a note. Iraq and Kuwait have roughly three and 14 days, respectively, before they would be forced to halt crude exports that pass through the strait, the bank said on Tuesday. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow, strategically vital waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s key oil transit chokepoints, carrying roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows. In a prolonged closure, losses could escalate to 3.8 million bpd around day 15 and 4.7 million bpd ‌by day 18, according to J.P. Morgan. Saudi Aramco seeks to reroute crude away from Strait of Hormuz, sources say Iraq will be forced to cut its oil production by more than 3 million bpd in a few days if oil tankers cannot move freely through the Strait of Hormuz and reach its loading ports, two Iraqi oil officials told Reuters on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the US Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary. Global oil and gas shipping costs surge as Iran vows to close Strait of Hormuz Iranian media reported that a senior official from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards said the Strait of Hormuz is closed and that Iran would fire on any ship attempting to pass. CBOT soybeans edge lower on China demand uncertainty, Brazil harvest

BEIJING: Chicago soybean futures edged lower on Wednesday, pressured by uncertain Chinese demand and the ongoing harvest in Brazil. The most-active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) lost 0.09% to $11.69-1/2 a bushel by 0400 GMT. The Middle East conflict, meanwhile, provided some support for soy and grains in the previous trading sessions. Markets are monitoring any revival in Chinese demand after Beijing met the 12 million-metric-ton soybean purchase target pledged to the White House, though traders remained sceptical amid high US prices. Top US and Chinese trade negotiators are expected to meet in mid-March, signalling that plans for a summit between US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping remain on track despite US strikes on Iran, Bloomberg News reported. Meanwhile, CBOT wheat rose 0.35% to $5.76 a bushel despite improving US crop weather and ample global supplies. Rain in the US wheat belt has improved conditions, weighing on prices, though dryness in some areas remains a concern, analysts have said. CBOT corn rose 0.06% to $4.46-3/4 a bushel, supported by strong export demand. The US Department of Agriculture confirmed private sales of 196,000 metric tons of US corn for shipment to unknown destinations in the 2025/26 marketing year. Commodity funds were net sellers of CBOT corn, wheat and soy futures, traders said on Tuesday. [...]

Palm snaps three sessions of gains on weak Chicago, Dalian edible oils

JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Wednesday after reaching a nearly four-week high in the previous session as easing Dalian and Chicago edible oils prices weighed down on the contract. Iron ore consolidates ahead of China’s annual parliamentary meeting

BEIJING: Iron ore prices moved in a tight range on Wednesday, as investors and traders exercised caution with eyes on the upcoming annual parliamentary meeting in the world’s second-largest economy starting on March 5. The most-traded iron ore contract on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) erased earlier gains to slide 0.33% to 746.5 yuan ($107.86) a metric ton as of 0153 GMT. The benchmark April iron ore on the Singapore Exchange was down 0.67% at $98.35 a ton, as of 0143 GMT. Investors were closely monitoring cues for China’s macro economic and industrial policy trend to gauge the demand outlook for steel and its ingredients. Most analysts expect Premier Li Qiang’s report on March 5, the first day of the gathering, to announce a growth target of between 4.5% and 5%, while pledging to boost both consumption and investment in high-tech industries. Beijing will also release its 15th five-year plan, which sets strategic objectives and policies for 2026–2030. Hopes for more forceful stimulus became more intense after China’s factory activity contracted for the second consecutive month in February, an official survey showed on Wednesday. Coking coal and coke, other steelmaking ingredients, shedgains from the previous session to fall 0.27% and 0.06%, respectively. Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were mixed. Rebar and hot-rolled coil were little changed, wire rod added 0.18% and stainless steel dipped 0.21%. [...]

Aluminium climbs on supply fears as Middle East conflict escalates

Aluminium prices continued to climb on Wednesday as supply worries deepened after Norway’s Norsk Hydro announced a controlled shutdown in its aluminium joint venture in Qatar amid ongoing war involving the US, Israel and Iran. The Middle East accounts for around 8% of global aluminium capacity. Supply concerns are materializing as the conflict spreads to neighbouring countries, following the Qatalum shutdown and Iran’s threat to target ships attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The most-active aluminium contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange was up 2.04% at 24,730 yuan ($3,576.13) a metric ton, as of 0300 GMT. And the benchmark three-month aluminium on the London Metal Exchange rose 1.18% to $3,289.50 a ton. Norsk Hydro announced the Qatalum shutdown on Tuesday after its gas supplier warned of an impending supply halt. The company said it had issued a force majeure notice to customers as the curtailment continues, with the shutdown expected to last until end-March and a full restart potentially taking six to 12 months. The disruption caused by the conflict “hits a market that was already tight,” Ewa Manthey, commodities strategist at ING said in a note. “Prior to the conflict, our aluminium balance showed a deficit of around 600kt in 2026. China’s capacity cap, trade dislocations and the imminent shutdown of Mozal were already constraining supply,” Manthey said, adding that dropping LME inventories, elevated premiums and the tightening spread between LME cash contract and the benchmark three-month all pointed at tight supply even before the conflict. A stronger US dollar continued to cap the upside of aluminium’s gain. Elsewhere, the most-active copper contract in Shanghai declined 0.57% to 101,830 yuan a ton, and the benchmark copper was up 0.64% at $13,068 a ton. Analysts at Citi warned that the Iran conflict could push copper prices below $12,000 a ton in the near term, as continued disruption would keep pressure on the macroeconomic backdrop and persistent drone threats to shipping routes and energy infrastructure add to market stress. They added that fading expectations for interest-rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve and softer cyclical growth forecasts have also contributed to downward pressure on prices. Elsewhere on SHFE, zinc dropped 0.51%, lead declined 0.67%, tin plunged 5.63% and nickel edged 0.08% higher. Among other LME metals, zinc added 0.34%, lead rose 0.26%, nickel gained 1.05% and tin climbed 4.19%. [...]

Australia, New Zealand dollars shaken by market tremors, solid data no help

SYDNEY: The Australian and New Zealand dollars were struggling to find their footing on Wednesday as the fallout from war in the Middle East roiled markets globally, while solid domestic data offered just a sliver of support. The Aussie was off 0.3% at $0.7010, after a wild session overnight saw it dive as deep as $0.69445 before paring losses. Major support lies at $0.6897, with resistance up around $0.7135. Dealers reported speculation some investors had cut profitable long positions in the Aussie to raise funds to cover losses on leveraged trades elsewhere. The kiwi dollar was pinned at $0.5878, after shedding 0.9% overnight to sink as low as $0.5837. The bearish turn risks a retreat to $0.5712, while resistance stands at $0.5929 and $0.6012. “The Aussie’s relative strength had reflected Australia’s position as a net energy exporter,” said Kristina Clifton, a currency strategist at CBA. “However, we judge that the Aussie and kiwi are at risk of a sharp fall if the conflict drags on and markets downgrade the outlook for the global economy,” she added. “The Aussie can fall below $0.6800, the kiwi under $0.5700.” The ructions in markets overshadowed data showing the Australian economy grew a robust 0.8% in the December quarter, lifting annual growth to the highest since early 2023 at 2.6%. The Reserve Bank of Australia has argued that growth above 2.0% is inflationary, one reason it hiked interest rates to 3.85% in February. RBA Governor Michele Bullock on Tuesday warned another rate rise was possible this month given the policy board was worried that inflation expectations could become unanchored. Yet, analysts noted consumer demand had faded somewhat during the fourth quarter, while labour costs eased and market sector productivity improved. And all this was before the hike in borrowing costs and the recent surge in energy prices. Markets imply around a 30% risk of a March rate rise, while a quarter-point hike to 4.10% remains fully priced for May. Australian three-year bond yields dipped 4 basis points to 4.30% after the GDP data, having earlier hit highs not seen since late 2023 at 4.389%. Spreads over Treasuries remained wide at 80 basis points, having reached levels last seen in mid-2016. [...]

Oil rises over $1 as Iran crisis disrupts Middle East supply

Oil prices rose more than $1 on Wednesday as the US-Israeli war on Iran disrupted Middle East output and halted exports from the region. Brent rose $1.11, or 1.4%, to $82.53 a barrel, after closing at its highest since January 2025 on ‌Tuesday. US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 79 cents, or 1.1%, to $75.37, after settling at its highest since June. Israeli and US forces struck targets across Iran on Tuesday, prompting Iranian strikes against energy infrastructure in a region that accounts for just under a third of global oil production. Iran has also targeted tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows. Traffic remained effectively closed for a fourth day after Iran attacked five ships. However, comments from President Donald Trump ‌that the US Navy could begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary helped keep a lid on crude price gains. Trump said he had ordered the US International Development Finance Corporation to provide political risk insurance and financial guarantees for maritime trade in the Gulf. But ship owners and analysts questioned if military escorts and insurance support would be enough to restore confidence. Countries and companies have begun seeking alternative routes and supplies. India and Indonesia said they were looking for other energy supplies, while some Chinese refineries were shutting or moving up maintenance plans. Saudi oil giant Aramco is attempting to reroute some exports via the Red Sea to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, sources said. In the United States, crude stocks rose by 5.6 million barrels last week, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures, well above the 2.3 million barrels analysts projected. Official figures from the US government are expected later on Wednesday. [...]

PARIS: Outflows from Iranian crypto exchanges spiked in the hours after the US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday, two blockchain analytics companies said, although researchers added it was not possible to be certain what was behind the moves. Funds leaving Iranian crypto exchanges jumped sharply to hit more than USD2 million in the hour after the strikes began, US blockchain research company Chainalysis said. Reuters’ first reports of the strikes were around 0615 GMT on Saturday. British blockchain researchers Elliptic said outflows from Iran’s largest crypto exchange, Nobitex, peaked at USD2.89 million between 1100 and 1200 GMT on Saturday, a roughly eightfold increase compared with the previous day’s peak hourly outflows. Overall, crypto worth USD10.3 million left Iranian crypto exchanges between Saturday and Monday, Chainalysis said. Nobitex was not available for comment. The data gives a glimpse into the growing role of crypto in Iran, where activity tends to rise sharply after geopolitical shocks, blockchain researchers say. While estimates can differ widely, researchers say crypto transaction volumes hit USD8-11 billion in 2025, as state-linked actors and retail investors alike have turned to the digital currency. The United States is looking into whether specific crypto platforms have facilitated sanctions evasion by Iranian officials, Reuters reported in February. Crypto wallet addresses are pseudonymous - recorded on the blockchain as a string of letters and numbers - making it difficult to establish who is behind transactions. Chainalysis said it was not clear who had moved funds in the last few days or why. “Some of these flows are almost certainly ordinary Iranians moving funds in response to rising risk,” Chainalysis said. Middle East situation: Minister seeks allies’ help amid economic pressure

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik said on Tuesday that the government is fully aware of the current Middle East situation and its implications. “We’re taking measures to address the situation,” he said while speaking on Aaj News programme ‘News Insight with Aamir Zia’. Ali Pervez Malik emphasised that the duration of the conflict is uncertain, and Pakistan will need assistance from its allies to cope with additional economic pressures. He highlighted government efforts to navigate the challenges posed by regional tensions. The federal minister’s comments come as tensions escalate in the Middle East following US and Israel’s attacks on Iran, with concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies and regional stability. Malik noted many countries are now part of the Middle East conflict, and it’s unclear how long the situation will last. Therefore, as a responsible government, we must prepare for all scenarios within our financial means, whether it’s external accounts, energy stockpiles, or savings. We should operationalise every element. The federal minister also appealed to Pakistanis to conserve fuel, including petrol, and remain vigilant. “The energy market situation is also concerning,” he maintained. While mentioning that the government has made arrangements and there’s sufficient petrol and diesel stock in the country, the minister warned that rising energy prices could increase inflation in Pakistan. “Pakistan imports LNG from Qatar Energy, and now that the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, Qatar has suspended production. Our LPG imports from Iran may also be affected,” he said. “We need to be cautious,” Malik urged, emphasizing preparedness for potential challenges ahead. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026 [...]

Global energy prices soar

Global energy prices soar

LONDON: Global oil and gas prices jumped on Tuesday as the US-Israeli war on Iran halted energy exports from the Middle East, with Tehran attacking ships and energy facilities, closing navigation in the Gulf and forcing production stoppages from Qatar to Iraq. Oil prices soared about 6percent to their highest since 2024 on Tuesday, rising for a third session as the US-Israel war against Iran widened, disrupting energy shipments from the Middle East and stoking fears of a prolonged conflict. Brent futures rose USD4.70, or 6.1 percent, to USD82.44 a barrel at 12:38 p.m. EST (1738 GMT). US West Texas Intermediate rose USD4.43, or 6.2 percent, to USD75.66. Brent was on track for its highest close since July 2024 and WTI for its highest since January 2025. Sugar, fertiliser and soy prices have all risen too. The conflict risks triggering a renewed spike in inflation that could choke off economic recovery in Europe and Asia if the war is prolonged in a region that accounts for just under a third of global oil production and almost a fifth of natural gas. Iraq, OPEC’s second-largest producer, on Tuesday said it may be forced to cut production by more than three million barrels per day in a few days if oil tankers cannot move freely to loading points, according to two Iraqi oil officials. As of Tuesday, Iraq has decreased production from the Rumaila oil field by 700,000 bpd and cut 460,000 bpd from the West Qurna 2 field, the officials said. Shipping at a standstill, oil and gas output slashed Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was closed for a fourth day after Iran attacked five ships, choking off a key artery accounting for about 20 percent of global oil and LNG supply. Crude tanker transits through the strait fell to four vessels on March 1, the day after hostilities broke out, versus an average of 24 per day since January, according to Vortexa vessel-tracking data. Three of the four were Iran-flagged. Hundreds of tankers loaded with oil and LNG are stranded near big hubs, such as the United Arab Emirates’ port of Fujairah, unable to reach customers in Asia, Europe and elsewhere. Some companies are trying to find alternative routes. Saudi oil giant Aramco 2223.SE is attempting to reroute some of its crude to its western Red Sea port of Yanbu, but sources, including buyers, traders and analysts, said Aramco’s east-west pipeline had limited capacity and could become a target of attacks by Iran’s allies. Failure to produce records before court: ATIR Lahore asks FBR to take strict action against taxmen

ISLAMABAD: Appellate Tribunal of Inland Revenue, Lahore, has directed the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to take strict action against the tax officials, who failed to produce records before the court in a case of tax fraud despite specific directions of the court. According to the judgement of the ATIR in the matter of Bright Star Engineering Works vs Commissioner Inland Revenue, Zone-II Corporate Regional Tax Office, Lahore, from the non-corporative attitude of the concerned tax officials prima facia shows that there is something dubious and ulterior motive involved for which the record has not been produced before the court. Such conduct, if left unchecked, strikes at the very sanctity of statutory limitations, undermines transparency in tax administration, and erodes confidence in the integrity of the official record. However, despite the specific direction of the Bench, neither the concerned officers have appeared, nor a record of the case was provided for our satisfaction/examination. From all the facts recorded above, it is very much evident that departmental officials have playing ping pong with this forum but neither tendered a personal appearance nor faithfully discharged their obligation to produce the relevant record. Therefore, the matter warrants immediate inquiry in order to ascertain the responsibility and to take necessary and appropriate action against the responsible persons. The FBR should initiate the inquiry, fix responsibility, and take strict action against the responsible persons under the law. In these circumstances, the tribunal is handicapped in judging the exact volume of tax fraud or pinpointing who is actually negligent for the misplacement of the official record, the tribunal said. It is the tribunal’s strong apprehension that the initiation of the case might have been made with allegations of huge tax fraud, but ultimately, after thorough investigation, the show cause notice was issued for a nominal amount of Rs 180,264, which is also a lapse of five years when the case has become time-barred. There is a common practice among the departmental representatives to say that the record is not available. Therefore, a thorough probe is needed so that in the future such a kind of controversy does not arise, the tribunal added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026 [...]

Auto industry: FBR regulations influence cost structure, competitiveness: CCP

ISLAMABAD: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has disclosed that the Federal Board of Revenue’s regulations in the automobile industry directly influence the cost structure, competitiveness and localization levels of assemblers and importers. According to the CCP’s study, the automobile industry is annually contributing around Rs 302 billion in taxes through customs duties, sales tax, federal excise duty (FED), capital value tax (CVT), Income Tax and related levies. Local manufacturing contributes an estimated Rs302 billion annually in taxes through GST, FED, customs duty, and income taxes across the supply chain. Replacing domestic production with imports would reduce this multi-layered tax base to a single customs collection point, amplifying fiscal pressures and reducing long-term revenue potential. READ ALSO: BR RESEARCH: Autos: The road back looks different The FBR, through its Inland Revenue (IR) and Pakistan Customs Wing, plays a central regulatory role in the automobile industry by administering import tariffs, taxation policies, and customs procedures. Its mandate includes revenue collection, trade facilitation, and enforcement of customs laws under the Customs Act, 1969 and related SROs. President LCCI for urgent, decisive policy measures to stabilize economy

LAHORE: President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Faheem ur Rehman Saigol, has expressed deep concern over Pakistan’s rapidly widening trade deficit and mounting economic pressures, urging the government to adopt urgent and decisive policy measures to stabilize the economy and protect domestic industry. Referring to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Faheem ur Rehman Saigol noted that Pakistan’s trade deficit has crossed USD25 billion during the first eight months (July–February) of fiscal year 2025–26, signaling growing structural challenges within the economy. Faheem ur Rehman Saigol stated that a deficit of such magnitude poses a serious threat to Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability. He emphasized that the simultaneous decline in exports and surge in imports reflects structural weaknesses requiring immediate policy intervention. He urged the government to revisit trade and industrial policies and develop a comprehensive export-led strategy focused on diversification, industrial support, and discouragement of non-essential imports. LCCI President also expressed concern over renewed inflationary pressures. Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation increased to 7 percent on a year-on-year basis in February 2026, compared to 5.8 percent in January 2026 and 1.5 percent in February 2025. He observed that escalating electricity tariffs, fuel prices, and food costs are eroding purchasing power while simultaneously increasing production costs for businesses. Faheem ur Rehman Saigol called on the government to review the energy pricing framework and rationalize taxes and surcharges that are placing excessive burdens on both consumers and industry. He urged the federal government to formulate a coherent, business-friendly economic roadmap aimed at reducing the trade deficit, controlling inflation, strengthening domestic industries, and ensuring fiscal discipline. He reaffirmed that the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the broader business community remain committed to working closely with the government to overcome economic challenges and place Pakistan on a path of sustainable and inclusive growth. Women Chambers of Commerce: BMG, BMP demand 50pc cut in fee

KARACHI: S. M. Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief of United Business Group (UBG) and former Provincial Minister, along with Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, Chairman of BMP-Progressive and Senior Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI), have jointly urged the Directorate General of Trade Organizations (DGTO) and the Ministry of Commerce to grant a 50% reduction in the prescribed fee for amendment in Memorandum and Articles of Association for Women Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Referring to Notification S.R.O. 2077(I)/2025 concerning amendments in Schedule “E” of the Trade Organizations Rules, 2013, they noted that the amendment fee has been fixed at PKR 100,000 for all trade bodies. They emphasized that trade organizations are not initiating these changes voluntarily but are revising their constitutional documents strictly in compliance with directives issued by the DGTO. Both leaders highlighted that Women Chambers generally operate with limited financial resources and modest revenue streams, primarily dependent upon membership subscriptions. Despite financial constraints, these chambers play a pivotal role in promoting women entrepreneurship, building institutional capacity, and strengthening women-led enterprises at grassroots and national levels. S. M. Tanveer stated that facilitating Women Chambers at this critical juncture would reinforce the government’s commitment to women empowerment and inclusive economic growth. He stressed that regulatory compliance should not become an additional financial burden for institutions working to uplift women entrepreneurs. Saquib Fayyaz Magoon underscored that a special concession of 50% in the prescribed fee would significantly ease the financial pressure on Women Chambers and enables them to continue their vital role in enhancing women’s economic participation. He reiterated that supportive measures are essential to strengthen institutional development and sustainability of Women Chambers across the country. The leaders expressed hope that the DGTO and the Ministry of Commerce will give favourable consideration to this request in the larger interest of women empowerment and economic inclusivity. EPBD sounds alarm over worsening trade gap

ISLAMABAD: President Economic Policy and Business Development (EPBD) think tank and former minister Gohar Ejaz has raised serious concerns over Pakistan’s worsening trade imbalance, highlighting that “no signs of export-led growth” have emerged amid a steep increase in the trade deficit. Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reveals that during the eight-month period from July to February, Pakistan’s trade deficit surged by nearly USD5 billion compared to the same period last year. Exports declined by USD1.5 billion, while imports rose by USD3.5 billion, deepening the country’s external economic vulnerabilities. “Exports and economic growth are the backbone of national economic security,” Ejaz said in a statement. “The government must urgently focus on reversing this trend before it threatens the stability of the entire economy.” The latest figures show exports dropping from USD22.07 billion in July–February 2024-25 to USD20.46 billion in the same period this year, while imports climbed from USD42.11 billion to USD45.50 billion. This has pushed the trade deficit to USD25.04 billion, up 25 percent year-on-year. Monthly data from February 2026 also reflects a continued slump in exports alongside stubbornly high imports, reinforcing fears that Pakistan is not benefiting from any meaningful export-led growth. Economists warn that if these trends persist, foreign exchange reserves could come under severe pressure, impacting currency stability and inflation. They urge policymakers to prioritize boosting exports, diversifying markets, and controlling unnecessary imports. As the government grapples with these challenges, Ejaz’s warning underscores the urgency for a strategic pivot towards export-led growth to secure Pakistan’s economic future. Tajikistan via Gilgit: Aleem underscores need for direct land corridor

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan floated an idea to establish a direct land corridor from Pakistan to Tajikistan via Gilgit to bolster economic ties between the two countries. The minister’s proposal came during his meeting with the Ambassador of Tajikistan to Pakistan, Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir, here on Tuesday. Both of them held extensive discussions on enhancing bilateral relations, regional land connectivity, and trade cooperation. During the meeting, both sides emphasised the need to adapt to evolving regional dynamics through effective strategies. The Tajik ambassador also proposed that Pakistan consider offering special concessional tariffs to Central Asian states to expand the volume of bilateral trade. While highlighting the regional security situation, Abdul Aleem Khan issued a strong condemnation of terrorism entering Pakistan from Afghanistan, termed such conduct as unacceptable and detrimental to regional peace and stability. The minister remarked that by acting as a proxy for India, Afghanistan has demonstrated an obstructive stance that negatively impacts not only Pakistan but also the broader Central Asian region. He reaffirmed that significant growth in international trade is contingent upon improving communication and transport infrastructure, noting that enhancing trade activities with Central Asian States would prove instrumental for Pakistan’s economic stability. Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir expressed the keen interest of Tajikistan’s 15 million people in developing closer cooperation with their 250 million brothers and sisters in Pakistan. He highlighted that the establishment of new trade routes would open unprecedented avenues for economic activity and prosperity across the region. The ambassador also extended a formal invitation to Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan to visit Tajikistan, which the minister accepted, expressing his willingness to undertake the visit in the near future to provide practical shape to the proposed areas of cooperation. The meeting concluded with a mutual resolve to modernise trade routes and strengthen bilateral ties to achieve sustainable development. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to making Pak-Tajik cooperation more effective, ensuring that improved connectivity leads to shared prosperity for both nations and the wider region. MWC Barcelona: PM’s cashless economy initiative takes global stage

KARACHI: Pakistan’s digital payments ecosystem is evolving from innovation to infrastructure, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Cashless Economy Initiative, supported by the State Bank of Pakistan’s enabling policies, driving momentum at national scale. These views were shared by Aamir Ibrahim, Chairman of Mobilink Bank and JazzCash, during a fireside chat with GSMA Fintech Lead Brian Gorman at the Fintech and Commerce Summit, where he outlined how the government’s push to accelerate digital payments is gaining measurable traction. The Prime Minister’s initiative focuses on expanding digital payment adoption, strengthening public digital infrastructure, and digitising government to person and person to government transactions. At its core is the objective of reducing reliance on cash, broadening documentation of economic activity, and expanding access to formal financial services. Ibrahim noted that Pakistan’s digital financial transition is built on strong institutional foundations led by the State Bank of Pakistan. The launch of Raast, Pakistan’s instant payment system, has enabled an interoperable payments framework that connects banks and wallets across the country, allowing customers and merchants to transact seamlessly. Within this national framework, JazzCash has emerged as one of the largest contributors to digital transaction volumes. The platform now serves nearly 58 million customers and supports more than one million Raast QR enabled merchants nationwide. In 2025, JazzCash processed Rs 15 trillion in gross transaction value, equivalent to roughly 13 percent of national GDP. The shift is visible across the economy. Small retailers are accepting QR payments in place of cash. Salaried employees are paying bills and school fees digitally. Freelancers are receiving cross border income directly into mobile wallets. Government welfare disbursements are increasingly delivered through digital channels, reducing leakages and improving transparency. In 2025 alone, JazzCash disbursed over Rs 100 billion in government to person payments, supporting the state’s objective of efficient and direct benefit transfers. The platform also issues more than 200,000 digital loans daily, extending regulated financial tools to micro entrepreneurs and small businesses that previously operated outside the formal banking system. Merchant digitisation remains central to the cashless agenda. With over one million Raast QR enabled merchants and tap on phone capabilities that convert smartphones into acceptance devices, JazzCash has expanded digital payment acceptance into urban centres and smaller towns alike. Documented transaction histories are enabling merchants to formalise revenues and access working capital through regulated channels. International flows are also reinforcing the digital shift. Pakistan recorded USD 38 billion in remittance inflows during FY25, underscoring the importance of cross border financial flows to the national economy. JazzCash processed Rs 138 billion in international remittances in 2025, enabling funds to settle directly into digital wallets, where they can be used for payments, savings, and credit. Ibrahim emphasised that financial inclusion is not only about convenience. “Digital transactions create documentation,” he said. “Documentation strengthens transparency, improves credit access, and supports broader economic participation.” As Pakistan advances its cashless framework, the combination of government policy, regulatory leadership from the State Bank, and private sector scale is accelerating adoption. CCP approves ISE Towers REIT asset transfer to subsidiary after Phase-I review

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) approved the proposed restructuring and transfer of designated real estate assets of ISE Towers REIT Management Company Limited to its subsidiary, ISE Realty Company Limited. CCP received a pre-merger application on January 23, 2026, jointly filed by ISE Towers REIT Management Company Limited and ISE Realty Company Limited. The transaction is being carried out pursuant to a Scheme of Compromise, Arrangement, and Reconstruction dated November 17, 2025. ISE Towers REIT Management Company Limited, formerly Islamabad Stock Exchange (Guarantee) Limited, is a licensed Non-banking Finance Company (NBFC). ISE Realty Company Limited, incorporated in October 2025, is a public limited company engaged in real estate development and marketing, including commercial and mixed-use projects. Under the approved scheme, designated real estate assets and liabilities of ISE Towers REIT will be transferred to ISE Realty Company Limited, followed by a reorganisation of shareholding through the issuance of shares to the existing shareholders of ISE Towers REIT. Following the restructuring, ISE Towers REIT will function as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to facilitate the launch and management of a REIT Scheme. The CCP’s review noted that ISE Realty Company Limited has been incorporated specifically to implement the restructuring scheme and is not currently operational in the relevant market. The assessment further determined that the transaction involves internal restructuring and transfer of assets within related entities. CCP concluded that the proposed transaction is unlikely to create or strengthen a dominant position in the relevant market, substantially lessen competition, or create barriers to entry. The assessment also found that the transaction would not adversely affect market dynamics. Accordingly, the Commission has authorised the transaction. The restructuring aims to facilitate the launch of a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) structure in Pakistan. Such initiatives can contribute to the formalisation and development of Pakistan’s real estate sector by promoting institutional investment, enhancing transparency, and improving efficiency in real estate management. Energy crisis in Strait of Hormuz could hit Pakistan’s exports: APTMA

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) on Wednesday voiced concerns that Pakistan’s export and industrial sectors are facing mounting risks as the ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Strait of Hormuz disrupts the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), driving energy prices higher and threatening the country’s power security. In a letter addressed to Minister of Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and other government ministers, including Minister of Energy Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other officials, the APTMA urged the government to take immediate measures, including suspending levies on fuel oil and boosting domestic gas production, to safeguard energy availability and protect export competitiveness. “We write to draw your urgent attention to the ongoing geopolitical crisis in the region and the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This situation is constricting the supply of oil and LNG to Pakistan and poses serious risks for the power sector and for the industry’s energy security,” read the letter. APTMA noted that the sharp rise in energy prices is expected to widen Pakistan’s current account deficit, while supply availability itself remains uncertain. “At the same time, higher energy costs will directly affect the competitiveness of the export sector. This creates a double impact on the economy: the dollar value of imports will rise significantly while exports, which are already under pressure, will face further risk,” APTMA warned. The association was of the view that even if the conflict stabilises in the coming weeks, disruptions in energy supply chains and prices are likely to persist for several months, which creates a serious concern for export industries. APTMA urged the government to immediately suspend the carbon levy and the petroleum development levy on RFO on an urgent basis. “This would make RFO a financially viable option for captive power generation for export industries. Given the current disruption in international supply lines, export of surplus RFO is also unlikely in the near term, ensuring sufficient supply in the domestic market,” it said. Moreover, APTMA also called for the removal of the cap on production from domestic gas fields and allocation of additional domestic gas to the power sector. Gulf conflict hits Pakistan fertiliser sector as Agritech shuts urea plant “The power sector currently relies heavily on imported LNG, particularly from Qatar, whose supply is facing serious disruptions in the present crisis. In this context, increased production from domestic gas fields and its allocation to the power sector would allow greater power generation from local resources and help reduce reliance on the uncertain supply of expensive imported LNG during the current crisis,” it said. The APTMA urged the government to take timely action and prevent a further decline in Pakistan’s export earnings during a period of external stress.

US issues travel advisory for Pakistan, warns citizens of terrorist attacks

The US has urged its citizens in Pakistan to remain cautious, saying that there was a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in the country. The United States Department issued an advisory on Wednesday, saying that violent extremist groups continue to plot attacks in Pakistan, especially in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding that they have also occurred in major cities such as Karachi and Islamabad. “Terrorists may strike without warning. They target transportation hubs, hotels, markets, malls, military and security forces sites, airports, trains, schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist spots, and government buildings,” it said. On March 3, the Department of State had ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and the family members of U.S. government personnel from U.S. Consulates Lahore and Karachi to leave Pakistan due to safety risks. The US asked its nationals not to travel to KP, Balochistan and the vicinity of the Line of Control. “Militant groups are known to operate in the area. India and Pakistan maintain a strong military presence on their respective sides of the Line of Control in the disputed territory of Kashmir,” it said. The advisory also cautioned them against being near a protest without a permit, warning that participation might draw scrutiny from Pakistani security forces. “US citizens have been detained for participating in protests. You can also face detention for posting content on social media viewed as critical of the Pakistani government, military, or officials,” it said. READ MORE: US citizens advised to exercise caution Moreover, the advisory added that Pakistan’s security environment remained fluid and sometimes changed without notice and could be a serious threat. “There are greater security resources and infrastructure in the major cities. Security forces in these areas may be more readily able to respond to an emergency compared to other areas of the country. The most reported crimes are pickpocketing, bag-snatching, and phone theft.” The US said that it had a limited ability to assist or provide services to its citizens in the KP, Balochistan, Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir, and most areas outside of Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. “US government personnel working in Pakistan must obtain special authorisation from the host government to travel to most areas outside of Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.” The advisory comes as security remains high around diplomatic enclaves and consulates to prevent any potential disruption to daily operations or risks to personnel. The development comes after at least nine people were killed and more than 12 others injured on Sunday in violent clashes that erupted between protesters and law enforcement personnel outside the US Consulate in Karachi, hours after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the opening salvo of a massive US and Israeli attack. Gulf conflict hits Pakistan fertiliser sector as Agritech shuts urea plant

The ongoing conflict in the Gulf is taking a toll on Pakistan’s local industries as Agritech Limited, a leading fertiliser manufacturer, has shut down its urea plant after Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) notified it of a potential force majeure on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, citing disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East. “This is to inform you that Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has officially communicated to us regarding a ‘potential event of force majeure’ declared by the LNG supplier,” Agritech said in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday. “This situation arises from the ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted LNG production facilities and subsequently affected LNG supply in the country,” it added. The development comes after most tanker owners, oil majors and trading houses have suspended crude oil, fuel and liquefied natural gas shipments via the Strait of Hormuz after Tehran warned ships against moving through the waterway. Oil jumps 10% on Iran conflict and could spike to $100 a barrel, analysts say More than 20% of global oil is moved through the Strait of Hormuz. “Due to this unforeseen development beyond reasonable control, SNGPL has informed that RLNG supply to our fertiliser plant shall stand suspended with effect from 00:00 hours on March 04, 2026, until further notice. “Consequently, our urea plant operations are shut down until further notice,” added Agritech. Agritech Limited was incorporated in Pakistan in 1959 as Pak-American Fertilizers Limited. The company is engaged in the production and sale of urea and granulated single super phosphate fertiliser, and its products are sold under the brand name “Tara” in the fertiliser market. [...]

Meet Geeta Gandbhir, the director with two separate Oscar-nominated films

LOS ANGELES: American filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir is making waves in this year’s Oscar documentary race, earning two nominations: “The Perfect Neighbor” for best documentary feature and “The ‌Devil is Busy” for best documentary short. Both films were already on the Academy’s shortlist of 15 before nominations were announced, so Gandbhir knew she had a strong chance. Still, the moment itself caught her off guard. “Don’t judge me. I slept through the nominations,” she laughed while speaking to Reuters at the Independent Spirit Awards. “I was so anxious the night before. I planned to go to bed early and sleep well, but I was awake until three in the morning staring at the ceiling. I literally slept through the announcements,” she added. “The Devil is Busy,” distributed by HBO Max, offers a gripping, ground‑level look at a day inside an abortion clinic in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighting the dangers that staff ‌and patients face amid America’s shifting political landscape. “The Perfect Neighbor,” distributed by Netflix, examines the events leading up to the killing of Ajike Owens in a Florida neighborhood, reconstructing the incident through police calls and body‑camera footage. ‘Peaky Blinders’ stars hit Brum red carpet for movie premiere Speaking at the Oscars Luncheon, Gandbhir emphasized how deeply personal both projects are. “Both were made with so much love and attention—and also with my family,” she said. “‘The Perfect Neighbor’ is made with my sister‑in‑law and my husband; they’re producers on it. And ‘The Devil is Busy’ is co-directed with my best friend from college.” Her connection to “The Perfect Neighbor” goes even further. “Ajike was a family friend,” she said. “That was our connection — mine and my team’s at Message Pictures — to the case.” [...]

Coco Gauff worried about civilian loss of life in Middle East

INDIAN WELLS: World number four Coco Gauff expressed concern about the situation in the Middle East on Tuesday and said innocent lives were being taken in the wake of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran. US President ‌Donald Trump’s administration has given conflicting reasons for the attack, while Iran has said the US assault was unprovoked. Iranian state media has said that among the civilian casualties were more than 160 killed in a strike on a girls’ school on Saturday. Administration officials have said they are looking into the incident and that the US would not deliberately target schools. “First off, what’s happening is unfortunate, and my thoughts and prayers are out there for everyone affected and for the innocent lives being taken,” American Gauff told reporters at the Indian Wells tournament. “I think it’s a lot of unnecessary violence going on.” The war in Iran has spilled over into the tennis world. An ATP Challenger event in the United Arab Emirates was abruptly halted and then cancelled on Tuesday due to a security alert, which led to players and personnel fleeing the courts to designated safe areas. Meanwhile some players, ATP staff, and coaches, including Gauff’s coach Gavin MacMillan, have been stranded in Dubai following a tournament there as the conflict has led to widespread travel disruptions in the region. The WTA has strong ties to the Middle East, with the season-ending WTA Finals being held in Riyadh last year and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) being the naming-rights sponsor the WTA women’s rankings. Gauff, 21, added that she has always felt safe competing in the region, and expressed gratitude for having left the area before the escalation of violence. “I think it’s just a lot of unfortunate circumstances that are happening right now,” she said. “I am thankful that I was able to get out of that before things turned to where it is now.” Reflecting on the broader implications of global strife, Italian player Jannik Sinner said: “There are certain scenarios we cannot control, so I tried to be focused. “But you also realize that there are much more important things in life than playing tennis.” [...]
