Volatile yen draws intervention watch, other currencies subdued

Volatile yen draws intervention watch, other currencies subdued

SINGAPORE: Currency markets focused on the yen on Monday following a sharp drop last week that spurred speculation of a rate check from Tokyo, while investors pondered interest-rate outlooks after a wave of hikes from major central banks last ‌week. The yen was a touch firmer at 156.64 per US dollar after dropping 2% last week. Japan markets were closed for a three-day holiday, leading to low liquidity while keeping traders on alert for an official intervention to prop up the volatile currency. The Bank of Japan raised rates on Friday to their highest level in 31 years to 1.25%, yet the widely expected move did not boost the yen as two dissenting votes and a lack of explicitly hawkish guidance disappointed investors. That led to the yen sharply declining before the Nikkei newspaper reported that Japanese officials conducted rate checks. A rate check involves authorities asking banks for currency quotes to gauge market conditions, which traders view as a precursor to currency intervention. Apart from the BOJ, the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank raised rates this month, with both warning further tightening might be needed to tackle inflation due to the almost seven-month-long war in the Middle East. Fred Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC, said the BOJ’s messaging has become all the harder because the Fed delivered a hawkish signal with its unanimous decision to raise its policy rate. The yen had firmed to its strongest level in seven months in early September as traders wagered on a faster pace of BOJ hikes and early signs of repatriation by Japanese investors but has since surrendered some of those gains. “The bar thus remains high for the BOJ to convince markets of its hawkish tilt and anchor expectations when it comes to the yen,” Neumann ‌said. “In the coming weeks and months, investors may again test the resolve of the BOJ to push rates higher and match the Fed’s tightening.” The euro was little changed at $1.1482 after voting projections showed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) took first place in state elections in northeastern Germany, in a blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative party. ING economists said the results clearly echo the low popularity of the entire federal government, and of Chancellor Friedrich Merz in particular. “Years of economic stagnation helped produce that fragmentation. Now the fragmentation will make the stagnation harder to escape,” they said in a note. The dollar index , which tracks the US currency against six major peers, was steady at 100.23 after gaining more than 1% last week following the Fed’s rate hike, as the central bank signalled more increases could be coming. Traders are currently pricing in a 55% chance of a rate hike at the Fed’s next meeting in October, up from 42.5% a week earlier, the CME FedWatch tool showed. “We do not think that the midterm elections are going to be a limiting factor in the Fed delivering another hike in October,” said Thomas Simons, chief US economist at Jefferies. “Whether there is another hike in December will come down to the data and geopolitical developments. Looking to 2027, the path of rates will come down to what happens with the labor market. We would say rate cuts are likely in second half of 2027.” In other currencies, sterling last bought $1.339 in early trading. The Australian dollar fetched $0.7129, while the New Zealand dollar was at $0.5721. [...]

SocGen hikes profitability target in new strategic plan

SocGen hikes profitability target in new strategic plan

LONDON: Societe Generale lifted a key performance target out to 2029 and said it would trim costs further under a new strategic plan unveiled on Monday that forms the next phase of CEO Slawomir Krupa’s effort to drive a turnaround of the French lender. France’s second-biggest listed bank said it was targeting a return on tangible equity of between 13% and 14% in 2029, up from around 11% this year, which is far below peers, and then 15% in 2030 and beyond. SocGen’s relatively high costs and weak profitability have dogged the company for years, with Krupa vowing to change that after he took the helm in 2023 and launched an initial three-year plan that has started to bear fruit following a difficult start. SocGen said on Monday it would reduce overall costs to below 16.3 billion euros by 2029, a drop of 2% versus 2026 levels, by spending less on procurement and IT, through AI-related productivity gains and from a reduction in the number of staff through natural attrition. The bank is aiming for a cost-to-income ratio of below 55% by 2029, against a current target of 60%. Revenues across the bank are forecast to rise by an annual average of around 3%. SocGen profit jumps 11pc as CEO steps up cost-cutting drive SocGen has seen its performance rebound in the past two years, reporting rising profits thanks to higher interest rates that have boosted bank coffers across Europe and a cost-cutting programme. Krupa will be hoping this new strategic plan is received more favourably after his last one in September 2023 landed badly, with shares falling sharply in reaction. “Today, we are entering a new phase. Our ambition is clear: to accelerate our profitable growth and maintain rigorous risk and cost discipline,” he said in a statement. Shares in SocGen have nearly tripled since early 2025, outpacing the STOXX Europe 600 banks index, as investors welcomed his focus on costs and capital. But the bank is still worth less than half French rival BNP Paribas, and faces the tougher task of proving it can generate sustained growth when digital lenders are expanding in its core French retail market and US banks continue to gain ground in investment banking. Performance at SocGen’s investment bank, its largest division, has disappointed in recent quarters. SocGen also said on Monday its payout policy to shareholders via dividends and buybacks would remain unchanged. If it hits its targets, it could distribute 21 billion euros ($24.11 billion) over a four-year period to 2029. [...]

Bangladesh raises fuel prices by up to 17% amid global oil price surge

Bangladesh raises fuel prices by up to 17% amid global oil price surge

DHAKA: Bangladesh has raised fuel prices by up to 17.4%, piling fresh pressure on consumers and businesses already struggling with power and gas shortages, as the government moved to stem mounting losses from surging global oil prices and higher shipping costs linked to the Middle East conflict. The new rates, effective from Monday, are expected to raise transportation and production costs across the import-dependent economy, adding to inflationary pressures at a time when industries, including the country’s key garment export sector, are already grappling with an acute energy crunch. The Energy Ministry said international fuel prices had more than doubled since March 2026, while freight charges had risen significantly because of regional instability. Under the new rates, diesel prices rose 17.4% to 135 taka per litre from 115 taka. Prices of octane gasoline increased to 165 taka per litre from 145 taka, petrol rose to 160 taka from 140 taka, while kerosene increased to 155 taka from 135 taka. Fuel price may reach Rs1,000 per litre if shortage occurs: petroleum minister The latest increase follows fuel price hikes in April and June, when the government also raised prices to help offset rising import costs driven by higher global oil prices. The ministry said state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation incurred losses of 228.76 billion taka ($1.9 billion) between March and August and that the latest price hike could cut annual losses by about 100 billion taka, while conserving foreign exchange reserves and curbing fuel smuggling to neighbouring countries where prices are higher. The ministry also cited substantial subsidies for liquefied natural gas, saying the government had continued to support electricity and gas supplies despite higher import costs stemming from the regional energy crisis. Uganda's export earnings up 10.2% y/y in July

KAMPALA: Uganda’s export earnings rose 10.2% from a year earlier in July, helped by higher shipments of commodities including gold, cocoa and flowers, the finance ministry said in a report seen by Reuters on Monday. The surge in export earnings could help cushion the local currency, the shilling, which has been weakening against the dollar in recent days. Export earnings rose to $1.40 billion in July from $1.27 billion a year earlier, the ministry said in its report. The increase in export receipts was mainly driven by higher earnings from shipments of a range of commodities including gold, cocoa, flowers, maize and others. Uganda’s export earnings up 11.3% y/y in June The value of gold shipments surged 35% to $788.45 million in July. Earnings from gold were up due to higher export volumes and an increase in international gold prices amid “increased demand for gold as a safe haven amid heightened global geopolitical tensions,” the ministry said. Uganda is a regional gold-processing hub. Gold and coffee are the East African country’s main sources of foreign exchange. [...]

Humanoid robot sales tally hit 7,000 globally last year

AMSTERDAM: Around 7,000 humanoid robots were sold worldwide last year for industrial and professional service use, figures compiled by the International Federation of Robotics showed. The relatively small number contrasts with forecasts for a boom in the coming years, particularly in China, the world’s largest market for industrial robots, which last month showcased humanoid running and boxing at its robot games. To qualify as humanoid under the IFR’s criteria, a robot must have a human-like appearance and operate autonomously in an environment designed for humans. Legs are not required. The IFR data, reviewed by Reuters ahead of publication, offer one of the first industry-wide measures of a technology that is attracting billions of dollars in investments and producing impressive demonstrations. Trump slams AI critics urging caution However, the numbers of humanoids remain “a fraction” of the overall robot population globally, Susanne Bieller, secretary general of Frankfurt-based IFR, told Reuters. This compares with around 542,000 regular industrial robots installed in 2024 and another estimated 199,000 service robots sold that year for use in transport, hospitality and cleaning. The 2025 data for industrial and service robots will be published September 24. Bieller said that among humanoids sold in 2025, many were not doing productive work but were bought by research institutions or companies using them to generate data for improving AI models. Carmakers, key early adopters, are running pilots with “single-digit or sometimes double-digit numbers of robots in their plants,” Bieller said. IFR has compiled robotics statistics for three decades, and has begun collecting humanoid data alongside its much larger industrial robot and service robot figures for the first time. Bank of America Global Research estimates that 90,000 humanoid robots will be shipped this year and 1.2 million by 2030. The IFR’s tally is based on supplier and national industry association data, and excludes consumer and military humanoid robots, while medical robots are classified separately. [...]

US Fed, BoE step up scrutiny of bank exposure to trading firms after Jane Street loss, FT reports

The Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve are asking global banks about their exposures to large trading firms after turmoil at hedge fund Situational Awareness caused large losses at Jane Street, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The AI-focused fund, run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, was forced to sell most of its public equities portfolio to Citadel Securities after a sharp sell-off in AI and chip stocks. This contributed to Jane Street taking a $15 billion hit that month. The central banks are now seeking information on the trading firms’ risk appetite, how banks’ exposure to them evolved throughout the trading day, and how risk controls operated, the FT report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The US Federal Reserve, the Bank of England and Jane Street did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside of business hours. Last month, the US Securities and Exchange Commission subpoenaed Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America. It was examining Situational Awareness’ trading activity and use of leverage following its near-collapse, including the trades that triggered margin calls and the fund’s communications with lenders. PSX: Buying continues, KSE-100 up over 450 points

Buying interest was observed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining over 450 points during the trading session. At 11:15am, the benchmark index was hovering at 171,350.38, up 465.80 points or 0.27%. Buying was observed in key sectors, including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and refineries. Index-heavy stocks, including HUBCO, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SSGC, NBP and UBL, traded in the green. Last week, the PSX saw pronounced volatility, with the benchmark index trading within a narrow range despite substantial swings in investor sentiment. Persistent geopolitical friction between the United States and Iran, renewed concerns over regional energy supplies, and a sharp rise in international and domestic oil prices kept investors cautious, limiting equity upside as the benchmark KSE-100 Index edged up only 372.73 points, or 0.22% week-on-week, to 170,884.59 points. Internationally, share markets edged higher in Asia on Monday as AI’s insatiable demand for data buoyed chipmakers, and oil eased on reports that more oil was finding its way out of the Middle East than previously thought, despite the ongoing conflict in the Gulf. Japan’s Nikkei was shut, but futures rose 0.5%, while South Korea’s tech-heavy index gained 1.5%. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.8%, and Chinese blue chips gained 0.6%. S&P 500 futures firmed 0.4%, while Nasdaq futures added 0.6%. In Europe, EUROSTOXX 50 futures and DAX futures both rose 0.4%, while FTSE futures firmed 0.2%. Bond markets remained tense after a vicious selloff saw US 2-year yields jump 36 basis points in the past two weeks to heights not seen since mid-2024 at 4.7604%. Hawkish guidance from the Federal Reserve last week has futures wagering on a 56% chance it will hike rates again in October, with a move by year-end considered a done deal. Australian shares edge lower as banks and miners drag

Australian shares inched lower on Monday, led by heavyweight banks and miners, as risk appetite weakened after renewed tensions in the Middle East. The S&P/ASX 200 index ticked 0.3% lower to 8,705.40 by 0018 GMT. The benchmark ended flat on Friday, finishing the week with a 0.1% loss. Iran and the US exchanged fresh threats over the weekend, underscoring months of deadlock between the two countries and adding to investor concerns about regional tensions and oil supplies. Oil prices eased on Monday, however, as hopes for a recovery in shipments from top exporter Saudi Arabia offset news of a Houthi attack on Riyadh. Mining stocks slipped 0.5% after a 1.9% jump in the previous session. BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue declined between 0.5% and 0.7%. Among gold miners, Northern Star Resources and Evolution Mining were down 0.7% and 0.2%, respectively. Bullion prices eased as the Middle East tensions added to inflation concerns and reinforced expectations that interest rates would stay higher for longer worldwide. Financials slipped for a second straight session, falling 0.3%. Three of the “Big Four” banks traded in negative territory, while ANZ Group was little changed. Technology stocks fell 0.6%. Accounting software firm Xero slipped 1.4%, while logistics software maker WiseTech Global declined 1%. Healthcare stocks were little changed, with a 2.7% rise in Cochlear largely offset by a 4.7% loss in Telix Pharmaceuticals. Telix agreed to buy Germany-based ITM Isotope Technologies Munich SE for about $1.65 billion, further boosting its radiopharmaceutical ambitions. Among individual stocks, Perpetual was the worst performer on the benchmark, falling as much as 15.8% in its weakest trade since November 2022 after the asset manager rebuffed EQT AB’s latest buyout bid. In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index edged up 0.1% to 13,756.44. [...]

South Korean shares start week higher as chipmakers rise on upbeat data

SEOUL: Round-up of South Korean financial markets:   South Korean shares rose on Monday, led by chipmakers after a rally in US semiconductor stocks in the previous session and upbeat domestic export data. The benchmark KOSPI was up 101.16 points, or 1.47%, at 6,995.39, as of 0134 GMT. Wall Street closed a volatile week on a muted note on Friday as benchmark US Treasury yields topped 5%, but the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.8%. South Korea’s exports for the first 20 days of this month hit a record high on a surge in chip sales, customs data showed.   Chipmaker Samsung Electronics rose 4.02% and peer SK Hynix gained 0.92%, leading the benchmark index higher. Among other index heavyweights, battery maker LG Energy Solution slid 2.75%, while Hyundai Motor and sister automaker Kia Corp were down 1.10% and 1.64%, respectively. Steelmaker POSCO Holdings shed 0.77%, while drugmaker Samsung BioLogics rose 0.14%. Of the total 909 traded issues, 310 shares advanced, while 549 declined. Copper climbs as Fed hike clears uncertainty

Copper climbs as Fed hike clears uncertainty

SINGAPORE: [Copper prices edged up on Monday](https://Copper climbs as Fed hike clears uncertainty), as last week’s interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve dispelled months-long uncertainty over rates, while optimism persisted over strong China demand. Benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange was up 0.06% at $14,530.5 a metric ton by 0300 GMT. Earlier, the price hit $14,600.50 a ton, its highest since September 10, when it hit a peak of $14,875. The most-traded copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange edged 0.37% higher to 109,940 yuan ($16,419.49) a ton. The Fed hike removed the biggest near-term uncertainty in the copper market, while extreme mine-side tightness and ultra-low Chinese domestic inventories still formed a floor, analysts from Chinese broker Everbright Futures said in a note on Monday. Higher interest rates can weigh on growth-dependent commodities like copper by dampening growth. Strong demand in China continues to support prices. The Yangshan copper, a gauge of Chinese demand for imported copper, finished last week at $124 a ton, its highest in nearly four years. Expectations for inventory replenishment ahead of next week’s National Day holiday in China also offered price support, according to the Everbright Futures analysts. Oil hit its lowest in over one week, even after the US and Iran exchanged new threats on Sunday amid a stalemate. US President Donald Trump said he would be open to meeting President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to be in New York this week. The war has weighed on copper prices by threatening to dampen global economic growth. Among LME metals, aluminium dipped 0.27%, zinc gained 0.52%, lead added 0.21%, nickel gained 0.64% and tin ticked 0.05% higher. On the SHFE, aluminium lost 0.57%, zinc gained 0.7%, lead gained 0.61%, nickel dipped 0.1% and tin gained 0.88%. [...]

India bonds could face headwinds from RBI debt sale, elevated Treasury yields

MUMBAI: Indian government bond market traders could once again try to push prices higher at the start of the week after witnessing declines in oil prices, but elevated Treasury yields and a debt market sale could cap the move. The benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond yield is expected to trade between 7.05% and 7.09% on Monday, according to a trader with a primary dealership. It ended at 7.0686% in the previous session. The yield has jumped 31 basis points in the last five weeks. Oil prices eased in Asian hours as investors eyed a recovery in shipments from Saudi Arabia despite ongoing attacks by Yemeni Houthis that have escalated tension in the Middle East, while the US and Iran remain in a stalemate. The benchmark Brent crude contract was down 2.3% on Monday to $101.50 per barrel, after hitting a high of almost $110 last week. “Oil can be called marginally supportive, but a firm push is needed below $100 per barrel for the 10-year yield to dip to anywhere close to the 7% mark,” the trader said. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India will sell bonds worth 250 billion rupees ($2.61 billion), through an open market sale, in what would be its second such operation in its series of steps to withdraw liquidity from the banking system. Last week, the central bank absorbed liquidity equivalent to nearly 0.2% of total bank deposits, with its first debt sale operation in nine years worth 500 billion rupees. Rate hike bets in India have also hardened after the Federal Reserve’s move, with many now expecting the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 bps on October 7. The 10-year US Treasury yield stayed sticky around 5%, after the Fed hinted at one more rate hike before the end of 2026. [...]

Chicago soybeans rise as China's buying of US beans falls in August

BEIJING: Chicago soybean futures edged higher on Monday as Chinese imports of US beans fell in August and traders await a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, later this week. Wheat and corn gained. The most-traded soybeans on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 0.7% to $13.12-1/2 a bushel by 0240 GMT. CBOT wheat gained 1.8% at $7.27-1/2 a bushel, while corn advanced 1.3% to $5.34-1/2 a bushel. Market players await the Trump-Xi meeting, in which Chinese purchases of soybeans and other US agricultural goods will be among the trade issues in focus. Chinese imports of US soybeans fell 12% in August from a year earlier, official data showed on Sunday. The world’s largest soybean buyer brought in 12.14 million metric tons in total in August, down 1.1% from 12.28 million tons a year earlier and up 5.7% from July. In the January-August period, US soybean imports fell 34% from a year earlier to 10.66 million tons, while shipments from Brazil rose 5% to 55.14 million tons. China had also passed the halfway mark toward its 25 million-ton US soybean purchase target for this year, with shipments beginning in September. The US Department of Agriculture, under its daily reporting rules, confirmed private sales of 111,000 metric tons of soybeans to China on Friday. Meanwhile, traders continued to assess the impact of war disruption to Black Sea grain exports from Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine’s weekly exports of wheat, corn and barley in the period from September 10 to September 16 fell 9% from the previous week to 270,200 metric tons, APK-Inform consultancy said on Sunday. CBOT corn, soybeans and wheat futures each hit multiyear peaks this month as conflicts in the Black Sea and Middle East disrupted commodity flows and market participants assessed the impact of stressful summer weather on US crop yields. But much of that support had already been factored into prices. Weather forecasts projected an easing in rainfall this week in parts of the US Midwest, tempering worries about corn and soy harvest delays. [...]

Yuan hits fresh multi-year peak as PBOC eases curb ahead of Trump-Xi summit

HONG KONG: China’s yuan strengthened to more than a 3-1/2-year high against the US dollar on Monday as the central bank softened its curb on currency appreciation ahead of the meeting this week between the leaders of China and the US.  US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng concluded talks in New York on Sunday, laying the groundwork for President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider at their summit on Thursday. The two sides are expected to discuss AI, trade relations, supply chains and Middle East tensions, among other issues, although analysts expect no major policy breakthrough.  The yuan strengthened to a high of 6.6957 per dollar in early trade, the strongest level since January 16, 2023.  The offshore yuan traded at 6.6946 yuan per dollar, up about 0.03% in Asian trade.  Prior to the market open, the People’s Bank of China set the midpoint rate at 6.7487 per dollar, the strongest since Feb 3, 2023, but 536 pips weaker than a Reuters estimate. The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% either side of the fixed midpoint each day.  For nearly a year, the central bank has set its daily official yuan guidance at levels weaker than market expectations, a move traders and analysts have interpreted as an attempt to slow the currency’s appreciation. However, the official midpoint has strengthened at a faster pace this month, narrowing its gap with market expectations after it hit its widest level since February, suggesting the PBOC has eased its resistance to yuan gains.  The fixing strength in the run-up to the Trump-Xi summit is in line with recent history, creating greater room for offshore spot to strengthen further, analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note. “The fact that the summit is occurring should help maintain a stable trading relationship… policymakers in China should continue to feel comfortable allowing sustained but gradual currency appreciation.” Broader currency markets were largely muted as investors pondered the global interest-rate outlook after a wave of hikes from major central banks last week. The dollar index, which tracks the US currency against six major peers, was steady at 100.23 after gaining more than 1% last week following a hawkish hike from the Federal Reserve.  A stronger and relatively stable yuan will help create a more constructive backdrop for US-China negotiations and reduce the scope for renewed accusations of competitive depreciation, but investors should be cautious about interpreting the PBOC move as the beginning of a sustained yuan appreciation cycle, OCBC said in a note. “Given the wide US-China yield differential and still-soft domestic fundamentals, part of the recent appreciation may reflect policy-managed stability around the summit rather than a fundamental re-rating of the RMB.” [...]

Australian dollar steadies after setback, rate support intact

SYDNEY: The Australian dollar steadied on Monday after two weeks of losses as a hawkish turn in the US rate outlook cooled its recent rally, though it remained near multi-year highs on the kiwi and euro with another rate hike at home all but locked in. The Aussie was little changed at $0.7128, after finishing last week 0.6% lower. It is now well off a recent four-month peak of $0.7238, but support is around $0.7075. Despite recent setbacks against the US dollar, the Aussie hovered near a 13-year top on the kiwi at NZ$1.2441 and a 22-month high on the euro, which fetched A$1.6093, as markets priced in a fourth rate hike from the Reserve Bank of Australia this year to 4.6% next week. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia and ANZ on Monday changed their rate call to pencil in a hike next Tuesday, joining the other two Big Four banks. ANZ is tipping another move to 4.85% in November. “The RBA has also had a range of opportunities over the past week, through its public communications, to pull back expectations of a near-term rate hike… To date, it has chosen not to,” said Adam Boyton, head of Australian economics at ANZ. “At this point it seems unlikely that the RBA communication slated for tomorrow will evolve sufficiently in such a direction to make a September rate hike sufficiently less likely.” Governor Michele Bullock, who warned inflation risks are materialising last week, will be giving remarks on Tuesday, followed by a speech by RBA board member Iain Ross in the evening. Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter will do a podcast interview early on Tuesday morning. Across the Tasman Sea, the kiwi was also flat at $0.5725, after dropping 1.5% last week to mark the fourth consecutive week of declines. It has support at a two-month low of $0.5705. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand lifted rates to 2.75% this month but projected a slower and more limited tightening cycle than markets had wagered on. Markets imply a 60% chance the central bank will hike at its next meeting on October 28. [...]

Palm rangebound on firmer Dalian soyoil; weak crude, olein weighs

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures were rangebound on Monday, as firmer Dalian soyoil supported the market while weaker palm olein and crude oil prices weighed. The benchmark palm oil contract for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 15 ringgit, or 0.31%, to 4,913 ringgit ($1,205.64) a metric ton in early trade. The contract fell 0.77% in the last session. [...]

Pakistan, EU ink €65mn financing deals

The Government of Pakistan and the European Union (EU) on Monday signed three grant agreements worth a total of €65 million (approx. Rs20.64 billion) to launch three programmes, i.e. the ‘Global Gateway development facilitation for Pakistan’, ‘Energy and Natural Environment Resilience in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’ and ‘EU Support to the Rule of Law and Business Environment in Pakistan’. This cooperation package operationalises the EU and Pakistan’s shared commitment to promoting economic and energy development and advancing the rule of law, read an official statement. The agreements were signed by the EU Ambassador to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis and the Secretary of the Economic Affairs Division, Muhammad Humair Karim. Funded under the EU’s Multiannual Indicative Programme 2021-2027, the initiatives focus on three main aspects of Pakistan’s development. The ‘Global Gateway development facilitation for Pakistan: Investment Management and financial enabling environment’ project aims to attract more foreign investment to Pakistan by improving the tax system and strengthening the government’s long-term financial planning. EU to impose provisional safeguards to protect electrical steel from imports The ‘Energy and Natural Environment Resilience programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)’ is designed to expand renewable energy in rural communities that are not connected to the electricity grid. It will also provide training to help attract private investment and increase private sector involvement in KP’s energy sector. Building on previous EU assistance, the ‘EU Support to the Rule of Law and Business Environment in Pakistan’ will further help people to access the police, prosecution, courts and legal aid in the provinces of KP and Balochistan. The programme will also support the provinces of Punjab and Sindh in expanding the use of alternative and commercial dispute resolution mechanisms in legal cases so that more European and other companies are interested in investing in those provinces. Speaking at the occasion, Karim expressed his appreciation for the EU’s continued support and partnership. He highlighted the timely nature of the interventions, highlighting their strong relevance with Pakistan’s goal of increased foreign investment, improved access to electricity in off-grid rural areas in KP and more advanced standards in the rule of law and the resolution of commercial disputes. Ambassador Karoblis stated that “these agreements demonstrate the EU’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic development and investment ambitions under our flagship Global Gateway initiative. “They will also support the authorities in KP to build a stronger and resilient energy sector while promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.  The Rule of Law will further strengthen access to justice for citizens in KP and Balochistan. In addition, Punjab and Sindh will benefit from our support to strengthen alternative and commercial dispute resolution through collaboration with the judiciary, legal professionals, universities and the business community.” [...]

Typhoon approaches eastern Japan, prompting flood and landslide warnings

TOKYO: A powerful typhoon was approaching Japan’s Pacific coast on Monday, bringing torrential rain, violent winds and a heightened risk of landslides across the Kanto region and other parts of eastern Japan, the weather agency said. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that conditions could deteriorate rapidly as Typhoon Dujuan was forecast to pass close to the Tokyo metropolitan area later in the day. Heavy rain has already drenched parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture and other Pacific coastal areas, with some locations recording more than 300 mm (12 inches) of rainfall since Saturday. The JMA said downpours could intensify from Monday afternoon as the typhoon nears the Kanto region, an area that includes Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. At the Asian Games in central Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, organisers postponed the equestrian eventing competition until Tuesday due to the approaching typhoon. Typhoon Saudel brings torrential rain, flooding to China’s coastal areas Authorities cautioned that linear rain bands could form over Kanto and central Japan, sharply raising the risk of flash floods and other rain-related disasters. Linear bands, which have become a growing concern in Japan in recent years, can dump extraordinary amounts of rain over a narrow area for several hours. Typhoon Dujuan comes amid a year of extreme weather events around the world, with unusually intense rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones affecting regions from East Asia to North America and Europe.

Australia to seek UN security council seat from 2029

SYDNEY: Australia will bid to join the United Nations Security Council from 2029, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday, as he launched a campaign to secure one of the two non-permanent seats available to its bloc. Albanese said Australia, whose last two-year term on the council ended in 2014, would have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping global responses to issues that matter to Australians if elected to the Security Council. “Australia punches above our weight and we can have an impact on the world, and that’s what I want to see Australia do,” Albanese told reporters in New York on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly. Albanese said he expected “very strong support” from Pacific island countries and Southeast Asia. He added that his “strong relationships” with world leaders would help Australia’s bid, even as a closely watched Newspoll conducted for The Australian newspaper and released on Monday showed his approval rating at home had slipped to its lowest level since he won its first term in 2022. Rapid developments in AI and the effects of climate change will be among the world’s top challenges by the end of this decade, making it in Australia’s national interest to be involved in the UN Security Council, Albanese said. The UN Security Council has 10 non-permanent members, with five elected each year. Finland is the other nominee, alongside Australia, for the 2029-30 seat from the Western European and Others Group. The Asia-Pacific, African, and Latin American and Caribbean groups will also put forward their nominees. Voting to select the non-permanent members for the 2029-2030 term is expected to take place by secret ballot in 2028. The United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom make up the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. [...]
