The local unit closed the day at 276.85, a gain of Re0.01 against the greenback. On Wednesday, the Pakistani had rupee settled at 276.86 against the dollar. Internationally, a downdraft in the US dollar took a pause on Thursday as investors began hunkering down ahead of a slew of central bank meetings next week, where hawkish holds are expected on interest rates in Japan, the US and Europe. The currency market is long the dollar on the assumption the ‌AI boom keeps the US economy humming and that strong growth supports interest rates staying higher for longer. Recent gains for sterling and currencies in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all of which have lately touched their highest on the dollar in several weeks, suggest dollar bets have been pared a bit, though moves on Thursday were slight. Sterling, which hit a one-month high of $1.3409 earlier in the week, has been supported by hotter-than-expected British inflation and held at $1.33955. The Australian dollar, which made a three-week top on Wednesday, is hanging on above 70 US cents at $0.7025, while expectations for a rate hike next week in New Zealand are hoisting the kiwi to a one-month high of $0.5709. The European Central Bank is expected to hold its benchmark rate at 2.5% next week, though a hike is all but priced in before the year’s end. Markets have priced a hold in Tokyo, too, with the next hike — to 1.5% — expected early next year. The Federal Reserve is seen on hold in October, with the Fed funds rate window at 3.75-4%, but hiking in December. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, rose to their highest since May on Thursday after more Houthi ‌attacks in Saudi Arabia stoked concerns over an escalation of the Middle East conflict and further disruptions to crude oil supplies from the world’s key exporting region. Brent crude futures climbed $3.19, or 2.9%, to $112.01 a barrel by 1311 GMT. They hit $112.68 a barrel earlier in the session, the highest since May 18. Gulf markets fall as fresh Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia raise regional risk

Gulf bourses ended in the red on Thursday as a new wave of Houthi attackson Saudi Arabia heightened fears that the conflict could spread. The US State Department has ordered some diplomats and family members to leave its missions in Saudi Arabia, and plans to pull family members from several other US missions in the region, US officials told Reuters. Saudi Arabia’s benchmark index declined 2.3%, posting its eighth weekly decline and biggest in over two years. Saudi National Bank, the country’s biggest lender by assets, slid 5.1%, and oil giant Saudi Aramco lost 0.7%. Riyadh has answered the Houthi attacks with a wave of strikes on missile launcher sites. It has vowed to protect the kingdom and said it has intercepted many of the group’s ballistic missiles. Dubai’s main index dropped 0.7%, with top lender Emirates NBD falling 2.9%. In Abu Dhabi, the index lost 0.7%. Geopolitical uncertainty and threats to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz kept investors on edge. Reports that some US troops and diplomats have left Middle East posts deepened fears of re-escalation and retaliation, said Milad Azar, market analyst at XTB MENA. Tensions also rose in the northern Gulf. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said four vessels involved in illegal oil transfers were hit simultaneously and caught fire after its forces tracked them on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Iranian media separately reported explosions of unknown nature and origin in Sirik in southern Iran. Qatar’s index slipped 0.3%. Qatar National Bank , the Gulf’s biggest lender, lost 1%. Outside the Gulf, Egypt’s blue-chip index tumbled 3.4%, its biggest intraday fall since June 2025, as most of its constituents were in negative territory. Asia rice: Indian prices hit more than one-year high on strong rupee, tight supply

Indian rice export prices rose further this week to their highest level in more than a year, supported by a stronger rupee and modest demand amid tight supplies. India’s 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $387-$392 per ton this week, up from last week’s $384-$389. Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $389 to $394 per ton. The Indian rupee has appreciated steadily over the past few days, prompting traders to raise export prices to reflect the exchange-rate movement, said a Kolkata-based exporter. The country’s rice production is set to fall this year for the first time in a decade, and by the most in nearly 20 years, as below-normal rainfall during the crop’s maturation period threatens to cut yields, industry officials told Reuters. Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at $440-$450 per metric ton on Thursday, flat from a week ago. External demand remains stable, and we expect more orders from the Philippines coming in from mid-November, a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said. Vietnam exported 228,871 tons of rice in the first half of October, raising its total shipments this year to October 15 to 6.6 million tons valued at $3.2 billion, according to the government’s customs data. In Thailand, 5% broken rice was quoted at $480 per ton, unchanged from last week, traders said. “Demand (is) coming from the Philippines. There are also vessels arriving to load rice, which has pushed prices up slightly,” a trader said. “Supply is currently being harvested in some areas, so we need to wait and see the impact on production once the floodwaters recede,” the trader added. Rice prices in Bangladesh remained elevated amid rising fuel costs, while aromatic rice prices surged despite the government’s decision to cut approved export quotas by 50%. The price hikes have added to the financial burden on consumers already struggling with persistently high inflation. [...]

PSX: KSE-100 down over 2,000 points amid escalating ME conflict

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) observed selling pressure amid concerns over a broader escalation of conflict in the Middle East, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index losing over 2,000 points during trading on Thursday. The benchmark index hit an intra-day high of 166,180.32 in early trade but came under sustained selling pressure. Trading remained volatile as the index maintained a steady downward trend, with minor recoveries in the afternoon failing to sustain momentum, dragging the index to an intra-day low of 163,782.41. At close, the KSE-100 settled at 163,924.31, down by 2,006.67 points or 1.21%. “Persistent geopolitical uncertainty, coupled with concerns over rising oil prices and their potential implications for Pakistan’s economic outlook, kept investors on the defensive. The absence of positive triggers further dampened sentiment, with selling pressure intensifying as the session progressed,” brokerage house Topline Securities said in its post-market report. ENGROH, UBL, HUBC, HBL, and PTC emerged as the major laggards, collectively dragging the benchmark down by approximately 752 points and amplifying the market’s downward momentum, it added. On Wednesday, PSX rebounded as renewed institutional buying, optimism over diplomatic efforts to resolve the US–Iran conflict and expectations surrounding the draft Auto Policy 2026–31 lifted the index. The KSE-100 Index gained 779.34 points, or 0.47%, to close at 165,930.99 points. Globally, Asian stocks struggled to stay above water in early trade on Thursday, as tech earnings optimism provided only fleeting support amid lingering concerns over AI ‌and uncertainty in the Gulf. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.2%, on track for a fourth straight week of decline. Japan’s Nikkei stock index gave up earlier gains to trade 0.4% lower, while Korean shares were down more than 1%. US stock futures, the S&P 500 e-minis, were down 0.4% at 7,765.8. Overnight, the tech-heavy Nasdaq led Wall Street to a higher close as better-than-expected earnings reports from market heavyweights helped ease some concerns over the sustainability and profitability of massive AI build-outs. SpaceX posted its first profit as a public company, Meta reported third-quarter revenue that beat expectations, while AI server maker Super Micro forecast quarterly revenue and profit margin that both topped estimates. However, Meta’s plan to issue non-voting Class C common stock drew renewed scrutiny on AI spending. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee continued its marginal gain against the US dollar in the inter-bank market on Thursday. The local unit closed the day at 276.85, a gain of Re0.01 against the greenback. Volume on the all-share index decreased to 367.09 million from 379.90 million recorded in the previous close. The value of shares declined to Rs17.99 billion from Rs21.28 billion in the previous session. Pak Refinery was the volume leader with 25.88 million shares, followed by Cnergyico PK with 23.19 million shares, and WorldCall Telecom with 22.16 million shares. Shares of 494 companies were traded on Thursday, of which 101 registered an increase, 355 recorded a fall, and 38 remained unchanged. [...]

Indian rupee snaps eight-day rally as oil climbs to highest since May

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee snapped an eight-session-long winning streak on Thursday as Brent oil prices climbed to their highest since May on deepening worries about conflict in the Middle East, which hammered global equities as well. The South Asian currency endured a volatile trading session, swinging from its strongest level in over six weeks to close down 0.4% at 94.8175 per dollar. Earlier in the day, chunky foreign inflows for Jio Platforms’ IPO added to tailwinds from the Reserve Bank of India’s defensive measures that had boosted the currency but its gains faded as oil prices climbed in the latter half. Traders pointed to broad-based dollar demand locally alongside broader signs of a risk-off move in global markets. MSCI’s All-World index was set for its largest daily fall in two weeks, down 0.4%, as tech shares from Seoul and Tokyo to Amsterdam and Paris came under pressure. Equity futures pointed to a weak start for shares on Wall Street as well. Oil prices remain a key risk Oil prices have remained elevated despite oil flows from the Gulf holding up, reflecting market anxieties over the conflict. “The sizeable risk premium currently embedded in prices is unlikely to fade until clear signs of de-escalation emerge and reassure investors that regional supply will remain uninterrupted,” ING said in a note. Brent oil prices were last up 3.3% at $112.40 per barrel. India imports nearly 90% of its crude requirements, making it one of the world’s most vulnerable economies to the Middle East oil shock. This remains a key risk for the rupee, with market participants and observers split over how sternly the RBI should defend the currency in the face of fundamental pressures. While senior IMF official Krishna Srinivasan said on Wednesday that India should allow the dollar-rupee exchange rate to move as the first line of defence, former RBI deputy governor Michael Debabrata Patra told Reuters that exchange rates tend to overshoot and can cause financial stability risks. Indian shares extend losses as high oil prices heighten inflation worries

Indian shares fell for a third straight session on Thursday, as an escalating Middle East war pushed oil prices higher to $112 per barrel, stoking inflation concerns for the world’s third-largest importer of crude. The benchmark Nifty 50 fell 0.54% to 22,687.65, and the Sensex shed 0.62% to 73,249.39. The broader small-caps and mid-caps dropped 1.1% and 0.9%, respectively. Other Asian markets also slumped to near three-month lows, after more Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia intensified concerns over broader escalation of conflict and fears of supply disruptions. The attacks prompted the US to order some diplomats and family members to leave its missions in the kingdom. “Higher crude prices remains the key overhang for markets as they heighten price pressures in the economy, besides potentially weighing on corporate profit margins,” said Sanjeeb Hota, director, head of strategy of equities at Standard Chartered India. “It should also be noted that markets had logged strong gains last week and this could just be profit taking, rather than any adverse view on earnings,” Hota said. Thirteen of the 16 major sectors logged losses, with IT, energy and FMCG losing the most percentage-wise. Heavyweight stocks on the benchmarks, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries, fell 1.8% and 2%, respectively. Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services slid 3.3%, with multiple brokerages flagging mounting funding costs and risks from insurance distribution reforms. Nestle India dipped 2.8%, Abbott India dropped 1.3% and Zydus Wellness declined 3.4% after receiving notices from India’s food safety regulator. Abbott said it was not aware of the social media content cited by the regulator until receiving the notice, and that it did not endorse the claims. Nestle said the notice reiterated earlier label-related concerns to which it had submitted a detailed response. Zydus Wellness did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Cybersecurity firm eMudhra slid 20%, taking its two-session losses to 36%, after the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team issued an advisory stating that some of eMudhra’s intermediate certificates were compromised. LME copper stocks in US climb to 12-year high

Copper inventories in London Metal Exchange warehouses in the US have swelled to their highest in 12-1/2 years as metal continues to accumulate in the country ahead of possible import tariffs from the start of next year. Stocks in US LME warehouses — mostly in New Orleans and Baltimore — now stand at 169,475 metric tons, the most since April 2014. They account for around 62% of all copper inventory on the exchange, the highest percentage since March 2019. There were 24,225 tons of copper deliveries into New Orleans on Wednesday, LME data showed on Thursday, as well as 2,450 tons of inflows into Baltimore LME warehouses in the US are bonded facilities where metal can be stored without paying customs duty. Eligible copper brands can be moved to warehouses on the rival COMEX exchange provided customs duty is paid The US Department of Commerce has proposed an additional 15% import tariff on refined copper imports from 2027, rising to 30% in 2028, but Washington has yet to announce whether the tariffs will go ahead COMEX copper stocks have climbed for 23 days straight to a record 794,450 short tons, or 720,712 metric tons [...]

India permits large silver imports despite weak domestic demand

India permits large silver imports despite weak domestic demand

MUMBAI: India has issued permits to import around 6,500 metric tons of silver over the next six months as the world’s biggest consumer of the precious metal seeks to meet festive-season demand, four bullion dealers who received the permits told Reuters. Higher imports by India, which relies on overseas purchases to meet more than 80% of its silver demand, could support global prices while easing hefty domestic premiums that have risen due to tight supplies. India in mid-May restricted imports of silver in nearly all forms with immediate effect. In June, it further tightened the rules by adding silver grain and powder to the restricted category and requiring prior import authorisation. “The government has allowed much more silver to be imported than the country is likely to need over the next six months, so this should help bring down domestic premiums,” said Chirag Thakkar, chief executive of Amrapali Group Gujarat, a leading silver importer. India’s August goods trade deficit narrows as gold imports plunge Silver premiums over official domestic prices fell to 45 cents per ounce on Thursday, down from up to $2.50 last week, dealers said. India has been trying in recent months to curb precious metals imports to ease pressure on its foreign exchange reserves and support the rupee. As part of those efforts, the government has raised import duties on gold and silver to 15% from 6%. The higher import allocation for the next six months surprised the market, as domestic demand for silver jewellery and investment has remained weak amid falling prices, dealers said. “The festive season is here, but demand is yet to pick up. Many investors have burned their fingers in the recent sharp price correction and are now staying on the sidelines,” said a Mumbai-based dealer with a bullion importing bank. [...]

Pakistan can triple incomes by 2050 with faster reforms: World Bank

Faster structural reforms could triple Pakistan’s incomes by 2050, the World Bank Group said in its latest Pakistan Development Update: Attaining Escape Velocity. Following progress with macroeconomic stabilisation, Pakistan now has the opportunity for faster and sustained economic growth and job creation, the global lender said on Thursday. According to the World Bank, sound macroeconomic policies over recent years have helped stabilise the economy and preserve growth, despite the impacts of the Middle East conflict. “Real GDP growth increased to 3.7% in FY26 from 3.2% in FY25. Revenue growth and expenditure restraint supported record primary fiscal surpluses, reaching 2.9% of GDP in FY26, while strong remittances allowed for the re-accumulation of foreign exchange reserves,” said the World Bank. These improvements were recognised with upgrades from two major international rating agencies (S&P and Moody’s), and allowed Pakistan’s return to international debt markets, with the issuance of a US$3 billion Eurobond. “Pakistan has made real progress in restoring stability, and markets have taken notice,” said Bolormaa Amgaabazar, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan. “But real per capita growth - the rate at which the income of the average Pakistani increases - remains stuck at around 1.6%. Reforms to drive faster growth are now urgently needed.” The report finds that such growth is possible if Pakistan follows the path taken by other successful countries in pursuing ambitious economic reforms. “Reforms that upgrade policies and institutions to the quality seen in the average middle-income country could drive sustained growth of up to 6.2–6.9% /annum, sufficient for Pakistan to reach Viet Nam’s current level of income by 2050,” it said. “With macro stabilisation achieved but fiscal resources and foreign exchange still tightly constrained, structural reform to encourage private investment is the necessary next step towards higher living standards” said Sebastian Essl, lead author of the report. “Achieving this kind of private-sector led growth requires a plan, coordination, and committed reform implementation.” The report highlighted a set of ambitious reforms that could help Pakistan reach, by 2050, the per capita incomes of countries currently at the upper-middle income threshold. Many of these build on measures already under way, including timely power sector tariff adjustments that helped cut energy subsidies from 1.1% of GDP in FY25 to 0.8% in FY26, continued implementation of trade liberalisation under the National Tariff Policy, and the recent privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines. “Building on these foundations, sustained progress will depend on continued reforms to strengthen the business environment, reform the tax system, reduce the state’s presence in the economy, and expand access to finance,” the World Bank said. South African rand pressured by rising oil prices as investors weigh budget review

JOHANNESBURG: The South African rand weakened in early trade on Thursday, pressured by rising oil prices as investors continued to assess the government’s mid-year budget review, which included two months of temporary fuel tax relief. At 0649 GMT the rand traded at 16.45 against the dollar , roughly down 0.5% from its previous close. Oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel on Thursday after more Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia stoked concerns over a broader escalation of conflict and further disruptions to supplies from the Middle East. South Africa imports most of its fuel, leaving it vulnerable to swings in global energy prices. Its regulated petrol price rose about 5% in September before surging 12% in October. The government will reintroduce temporary fuel levy cuts for two months from November, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said on Wednesday, in a 10 billion rand ($608 million) effort to ease cost-of-living pressures South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond strengthened in early deals, as the yield fell three basis points to 8.56%. Govt raises diesel price by Rs1.64, cuts petrol by Rs1.60 per litre

The government has increased the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.64 per litre and reduced petrol price by Rs1.60 per litre, effective October 23, 2026. According to a press release issued by the Petroleum Division on Thursday, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revised the ex-depot prices of petroleum products under the federal government’s petroleum pricing mechanism. Following the revision, the price of HSD has increased from Rs390.11 to Rs391.75 per litre, while petrol price has declined from Rs379.31 to Rs377.71 per litre. The revised prices will be effective for October 23, 2026. The government on Wednesday, reduced the price of petrol by Rs2.71 to Rs379.31 per litre, while increasing the price of diesel by Re0.31 to Rs390.11 per litre. Globally, oil prices climbed about 2% to a five-month high on Thursday after Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia stoked concerns of further disruption to energy supplies from the key exporting region. Brent futures rose $2.42, or 2.2%, to $111.24 a barrel at 10:45 a.m. EDT (1445 GMT), while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $1.14, or 1.2%, to $98.29. That drove Brent into technically overbought territory for a third time in a week and set for its highest close since May 18. [...]

PTC urges PM to mobilise ministries to retain GSP+ under new EU scheme

The Pakistan Textile Council (PTC) has asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to direct all concerned ministries, divisions and provincial governments to take every necessary measure to secure GSP+ status for Pakistan under the European Union’s new Generalised Scheme of Preferences. In a letter dated October 22, PTC Chairman Fawad Anwar said that under the new GSP Regulation approved by the European Parliament in April, Pakistan will remain a GSP+ beneficiary only until December 31, 2028. To continue enjoying preferences from January 2029, it must submit a request before that date, including binding undertakings and a time-bound plan of action. As the new scheme runs until 2036, the outcome will determine Pakistan’s EU market access for the rest of that period. The Council said the EU-27 was the textile and apparel sector’s largest market in FY2025-26 at $7.103 billion, about 39.5 percent of total exports of $18.004 billion and more than the US and UK combined. While exports to the bloc fell 2.0 percent last fiscal year, they rose 3.0 percent to $1.954 billion in July-September 2026, led by towels, men’s cotton trousers and bed covers. The PTC warned that competitors are gaining ground, with the EU-India Free Trade Agreement expected to be signed in December and enter into force in early 2027, the EU signalling readiness to explore an FTA with Bangladesh, and the European Free Trade Association signing an FTA with Vietnam on October 18. Citing recent meetings with EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis and EU Delegation officials, the letter said the EU expects substantial improvements on human rights and rule of law, as identified in its July 16 assessment. The EU is not introducing new standards but wants effective implementation of commitments Pakistan has already made, starting with demonstrable short-term improvements followed by a credible action plan. The PTC urged active engagement by relevant ministries and provinces with the European Commission, timely reporting to UN and ILO monitoring bodies, finalisation of the application well ahead of the deadline, appointment of a senior focal point, regular progress reviews by the PM’s Special Committee on EU GSP+, and inclusion of the private sector in consultations. According to the commission, the revisions align with the prime minister’s directions to ensure the bank retains its focus on agricultural and farmer financing after privatisation.

India's JSW Paints eyes 4, 5-year debt to refinance acquisition-led funding, bankers say

MUMBAI: India’s JSW Paints is likely to raise funds through issuance of bonds maturing in four years and five years and should go ahead with the sale in the next couple of weeks, two merchant bankers with direct knowledge of the matter said on Thursday. The company could look to raise around 30 billion rupees ($316.56 million), the bankers said. The bankers requested anonymity as they are not authorized to speak to media. JSW Paints did not reply to a Reuters email seeking comment. The proceeds of the latest debt issuance are likely to be used for the refinancing of an earlier fundraise the company put towards its acquisition of Akzo Nobel India last year, the bankers added. JSW Group firms plan $300 million debt sales, bankers say In November 2025, JSW Paints had raised 33 billion rupees through sale of five-year bonds, which were directly placed with large foreign banks and foreign investors. These bonds had a put option at the end of a year. Indian companies have been turning to the bond market to fund acquisitions in recent months, driven by robust demand from investors that’s contributing to what may become a record year for corporate debt issuance in the country. IMF, OECD warn AI could widen rich-poor country divide

Artificial intelligence could boost global growth, but poorer countries, smaller companies and younger workers risk missing out unless access to power, digital infrastructure and skills improves, according to officials from the IMF and OECD. The warning comes as massive investment in chips and AI infrastructure has helped support global growth and drive stock markets to record highs, while raising concerns about whether companies can generate sufficient returns on large spending commitments as borrowing costs rise. “For many developing economies, the critical question is whether they can adopt and diffuse AI,” Era Dabla-Norris, deputy director of the International Monetary Fund’s Fiscal Affairs Department, told the Reuters Global Markets Forum. AI could reshape Pakistan’s labour market, puts service-sector jobs in focus: World Bank Effective AI adoption could add up to 0.5% to annual global growth over the medium term, the IMF estimates. “But the aggregate productivity evidence, so far, is much less,” Dabla-Norris said. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development estimates AI could add 0.4% to 1.2% to annual productivity growth across its member countries. But its chief economist, Stefano Scarpetta, said that workplace use trails consumer use, with only limited adoption in core business functions. “There is a large gap between exposure and actual use,” Scarpetta said. The IMF estimates that about 40% of jobs worldwide could be exposed to AI, as reports of mass layoffs gather pace. Anthropic’s Clark says AI’s impact accelerating quickly and could vastly boost US GDP Barclays said it was cutting around 5,000 jobs this year as it uses technology including AI to reduce costs and improve returns. EBay is reported to be laying off 9% of its workforce, while Qualcomm is expected to cut jobs globally in a “performance-focused reduction”. Dabla-Norris said younger and entry-level workers could be particularly vulnerable if AI takes over tasks through which employees traditionally gain experience.

Spotify forecast fourth-quarter profit above Wall Street estimates on Thursday, as the Swedish music streaming company bets on its AI-powered features to drive user growth in the crucial holiday season. Shares of the company rose nearly 4% in premarket trading. Investors have closely watched the company’s profitability as it spends on AI to improve discovery and engagement to attract more users and fend off emerging music-generation rivals such as Suno and Udio. Spotify expects operating income of €820 million ($920.53 million), compared with analysts’ average estimate of €813.4 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company’s AI-powered features include AI DJ, which curates personalized music mixes with spoken commentary, and prompt-based playlists that let users describe a mood or listening preference to generate tailored selections. “We’ve built a strong business that keeps compounding, we invest when we see a path for growth, our costs are moderating, and there is more runway ahead,” co-CEO Alex Norstrom said in a statement. In the third quarter, Spotify’s operating income of €672 million came in line with Visible Alpha-compiled analysts’ average estimate of €671.8 million. It posted revenue of €4.97 billion in the three months ended September 30, compared with an LSEG-compiled estimate of €4.98 billion. It reported earnings per share of €2.48, compared with estimates of €2.80. Spotify’s monthly active users forecast of 818 million for the fourth quarter was marginally below Visible Alpha estimates of 819 million, while its outlook for about 10 million increase in premium subscribers to 316 million was above expectations of 314.7 million. Its monthly active users grew 1% sequentially in the third quarter to reach 788 million. Earlier this week, Spotify announced a licensing deal with music distributor Believe for its upcoming paid tool for fan-made AI covers and remixes. It has also signed licensing deals with Universal Music Group, Merlin and Kobalt for the tool. [...]

Burnout is not a business strategy

Burnout is not a business strategy

For much of the past two decades, Silicon Valley has done more than produce successful companies. It has shaped the global imagination of what entrepreneurship is supposed to look like. Success, according to this narrative, is measured in dizzying speed. Founders are expected to scale relentlessly, ‘embrace’ uncertainty, pursue venture capital and treat growth as the ultimate objective. Somewhere along the way, the modern entrepreneur also acquired an oddly specific lifestyle: waking at the crack of dawn, surviving on four hours of sleep, chugging protein shakes between investor calls, tracking every biometric imaginable, extolling the virtues of breathwork, cold plunges and the latest ayahuasca retreat, all while somehow remaining impeccably fit and endlessly productive. The entrepreneur who sacrifices almost everything else is not regarded as someone struggling to keep pace, but as someone sufficiently committed to their vision. Hence, exhaustion has become evidence of ambition. The influence of that philosophy extends far beyond California. Through books, podcasts, accelerator programmes and social media, it has become the dominant language of entrepreneurship and of a successful life almost everywhere. We have adopted its vocabulary so completely that we rarely pause to ask whether the assumptions beneath it hold true. This is not an argument against Silicon Valley…far from it. It has transformed industries, accelerated technological progress and produced companies that have fundamentally changed how we live and work. Nor is it an argument against ambition. Ambition has always been one of the most powerful drivers of innovation. It is, however, an argument for recognising that we have built and even romanticised a way of life the human body was never designed to sustain, and that the achievements we celebrate are being won at the cost of what constitutes a meaningful life. We are working with a body that took several million years to arrive at its current specification, and we have spent perhaps 40 years assuming we can ‘hack’ what it needs in order to serve our ambitions. We cannot. Sleep is not a preference or a weakness of character; it is the process through which the brain consolidates memory, clears metabolic waste and restores the capacity for judgement. Chronic sleep deprivation degrades attention, working memory, emotional regulation and risk assessment, all of which are what good decisions are made of, and decision-making is a large part of a founder’s job. Sustained stress narrows cognitive flexibility and reduces creativity. Social connection is not the reward to be won at the end of a hard day, it is one of the strongest predictors of how long a person lives and how well. None of this is new information, but it is being brought to light more often now because of the problems our hustle culture has exposed. We have simply outrun the environment we were built for, both figuratively and literally, and then decided that speed was a virtue. Almost everything we know about hustle culture was written by the people it did not break. The founders who abandoned the game at 34, whose health failed, whose marriages did not hold, whose companies folded quietly, are not the ones writing the books or hosting the podcasts. When a hundred people take the same wager and one wins, we do not usually call the wager wisdom. Whatever the achievement is, it is bought at the expense of sleep, of health, of the people left waiting for you, of the friendships that quietly lapse because you have nothing left to bring to them, and most of all of the curiosity with which you once approached life, before every moment was planned and spoken for. Those are not the costs of a life well lived. They are very close to a definition of one. And a good deal of the price is not paid by the person who agreed to it. It is paid by children who learned that presence is the first thing sacrificed, by partners who absorbed everything that was set down, by parents who were visited less. They did not take the wager. They are simply carrying part of it. This is the inversion at the centre of the whole arrangement. People start businesses to solve a problem, to earn a living, to build something of their own, to find meaning and autonomy and the ability to be useful and present. When the business consumes the life instead, the machine has started running in the wrong direction, and no amount of growth corrects for that. Why did you start doing what you are doing? And are you moving towards that reason or away from it? The archetype has one more problem, and it is a modelling error rather than a moral one. Much of the global conversation about entrepreneurship still assumes a founder whose time belongs entirely to the business. That person is only possible if somebody else is absorbing the care of children, the care of elders, the running of a household, the thousand forms of invisible labour that never appear in discussions of innovation. He was not a universal human being. He was a specific arrangement, and the arrangement required someone else. A great deal of that invisible labour falls to women, not only in Pakistan but everywhere. For most women, time has always been negotiated rather than owned, which is usually diagnosed as a disadvantage. The conclusion drawn is that women need to become more like the archetype. That is not possible, in our society or in any other. A mother will always be a mother, and no relationship is truly replaceable, but the work of keeping relationships alive has historically fallen more to women than to men. I have come to believe we should be learning from women instead, from how they run businesses alongside everything else they carry and show up for. A person who has always had to build inside real constraints, with finite hours and other people to answer to, has been practicing something the archetype never had to learn. Building a business that coexists with the rest of life is not a compromise. It may be the more sophisticated design. The part that troubles me most is not what this does to the people currently living it. It is what we are transmitting to the young people around us. A generation is growing up watching adults treat depletion as achievement, watching the four-hour night reported as a triumph, learning by direct observation that a life is something you spend rather than something you cherish and build. We are not merely enduring this culture. We are handing it on, with approval attached, to people who will inherit the same unrevised biology and a still more demanding set of expectations. I see the result in the hiring room. Having interviewed young candidates every year for some time now, I have watched the middle disappear. One kind arrives having swallowed the myth whole, already fluent in optimisation and already without much of a life outside the work. The other has recoiled from it so completely that turning up on time reads as a concession to a system they have decided is not worth the effort. It is tempting to call the second group undisciplined. I think they are the same casualty. Both have been shown a single model of working life, one that asks for everything and calls the asking opportunity, and they have taken the only two positions it leaves open: comply, or withdraw. Neither is a good way to build a career or a life. I understand how we arrived here. Founders care deeply about what they are building. There are seasons when the hours are long, the decisions difficult and the uncertainty relentless. Entrepreneurship has never been easy, and no one should pretend otherwise. But difficulty and self-destruction are not the same thing, and somewhere along the way we confused depletion with dedication. Pakistan does not need less entrepreneurship. If anything, it needs a great deal more of it. We need founders who solve meaningful problems, create employment, strengthen local industries and build globally competitive companies. What we do not need is a definition of success that treats the founder as a consumable input. Perhaps the people who shape the next chapter will not be those who scale the quickest or speak the loudest in the boardroom. They may be the ones who understood that a human being is not a resource to be depleted in service of a valuation, and that a business capable of sustaining both its founder and its future was the more ambitious goal all along. Millions of hacking attempts as companies, governments rush to patch PHP flaws

TOKYO/BEIJING/AMSTERDAM: Global firms and governments rushed on Thursday to patch critical flaws in the PHP programming language that underpins much of the internet, as a cloud firm reported millions of hacking attempts after vulnerabilities were disclosed. The push came after governments in Europe and elsewhere took websites offline as a precaution on Wednesday while website operators scrambled to secure systems running the software. The emergency shutdowns of banking, airline, rail, tax and government services from Tokyo to Helsinki mark one of the most dramatic tests of the decades-old programming tools that keep the web running, exposing how deeply governments and companies depend on code that few people understand. “I’ve not seen anything like this in a long, long time,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at an event in Germany on Thursday, saying the incident showed the importance of building software that can be maintained securely as systems grow more complex. “It was a long day and a long night, I know, for all the IT and security folks.” Websites go dark worldwide as AI exposes critical security flaws PHP key to internet’s foundations like HTML, Python The developers of PHP - a key computing language like HTML and Python - released fixes on Wednesday for vulnerabilities that had lurked in the software for years until they were uncovered using AI, urging users to “update immediately”. Madeline Lawrence, co-founder of Belgian cybersecurity firm Aikido Security, said that details of the flaws had become public before fixes were ready, with attacks reported since. “Companies are racing to update against attackers who can use AI to exploit them. That’s the whole race,” she said. As companies and governments deployed patches and suspended websites as a precaution, hacking attempts surged into the millions, according to cloud services firm Cloudflare. “In the 10 hours before it was publicly announced, across the network we saw thousands of attempts to exploit it,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said in a post on X late on Wednesday. OpenAI apologies for Australian government website hack, pledges to rebuild trust “That jumped to tens of thousands in the 45 minutes post announcement, hundreds of thousands within 2 hours, and millions now.” Impact from Japan to Finland Japanese companies including brokerage Nomura, lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, airline ANA and East Japan Railway said on Thursday they were temporarily suspending some internet services as part of emergency measures. Brewer Asahi Group Holdings temporarily suspended certain websites and systems and was conducting a security impact assessment. Insurer Tokio Marine Holdings said it had suspended its group website. Japan’s Ministry of Finance and Meteorological Agency partially suspended online services to implement safety measures, while Japan’s National Tax Agency temporarily took down its service. The precautionary shutdowns show Japan’s growing concerns over cybersecurity, as the country recorded more cyber incidents in the first nine months of the year than in all of last year, according to data from TrendAI. French telecoms group Orange said it had temporarily suspended access to certain PHP-based websites and applications across several subsidiaries as a precaution. Tencent Cloud, one of China’s largest cloud-computing providers, urged customers to install updated PHP versions but stopped short of calling for widespread website shutdowns. ‘Pakistan Zindabad’: Indian news channel hacked by Pakistani Cyber Force Finland’s state IT services provider Valtori said it had continued installing PHP security patches overnight and was gradually lifting precautionary service blocks after shutting down government public web services a day earlier. “Restoring services can take days or even weeks, as in addition to updates, the systems need to be carefully tested,” Valtori Director General Hannu Naumanen said in a statement. Valtori said the outages were not caused by exploitation of the vulnerabilities or by a cyber breach, and that it was not aware of any active exploitation of the flaws. Some fixes may take weeks to implement Several Asian governments ordered cybersecurity inspections related to the PHP vulnerabilities on Thursday. China’s industry ministry urged organizations and users to inspect systems and upgrade to the latest secure version of PHP. It also recommended strengthening cybersecurity monitoring and changing accounts, passwords and keys where necessary. South Korea raised its private-sector cybersecurity alert level and activated emergency response measures, citing concerns over an increased risk of hacking attacks. Felix Kuhlenkamp, head of security at German digital industry association Bitkom, said that many larger operators had already carried out updates, but that for complex IT systems and smaller organizations it could take longer. “They may run a website using PHP but don’t really keep a close eye on it,” he said. “If a website is based on an old version of PHP for which there is no security update, the entire system must be updated.” [...]

Brook scores fastest double century in ODI history in rampant England's 429-4

RAWALPINDI: An inspired Harry Brook scored the fastest double hundred in ODI history as England piled up 429-4 against Sri Lanka in the tri-series in Rawalpindi on Thursday. The batsman’s 116-ball 202 also made him the first Englishman to hit a double century in a one-day international. The captain clobbered 10 sixes and 21 fours as England posted a first 400-plus ODI total in Pakistan. He reached 200 in 114 balls, beating the previous fastest double century in ODIs, by Shubman Gill (117 balls) for India against West Indies last month. Brook was joined in the fireworks by Joe Root, who scored a 66-ball 69 and became the first England batter to complete 8,000 runs, in his 197th one-day international. Brook was dismissed off the final delivery, caught off pacer Janith Liyanage, but not before helping England add 156 runs in the last 10 overs. Opener Tom Banton set the tone with a 51-ball 50 and Will Jacks was 66 not out with three sixes and eight fours. But the day belonged to history-maker Brook, who added 185 runs off just 79 balls with Jacks for the fourth wicket. He had set up the innings with a third-wicket stand of 159 with Root. The previous highest ODI total at a Pakistan venue was 375-3 for the hosts against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 2015. [...]

Top-ranked Rybakina into Ningbo quarter-finals on return from injury

SHANGHAI: World number one Elena Rybakina reached the quarter-finals of the Ningbo Open on Thursday on her return from injury when opponent Polina Kudermetova retired. The top seed and defending champion was cruising 5-0 in eastern China when the world number 105 from Uzbekistan called it quits because of injury. Moscow-born Kazakh Rybakina will face Poland’s unseeded Katarzyna Kawa in the last eight. Rybakina, 27, won the US Open for her third Grand Slam crown in September and usurped Aryna Sabalenka as world number one in New York. She was then stunned in the second round in Beijing at the start of this month, and pulled out of the Wuhan Open citing a foot injury. “Definitely not the way I wanted to finish the match,” Rybakina, also the reigning Australian Open champion, said of the injury to Kudermetova. “There is always room to improve and we’ll see how the next one is going to go.” Rybakina withdraws from Wuhan with injury after China Open exit She added: “I’m just happy being here in Ningbo again, remembering the previous memories, and hoping that I can finish the year strong and be at my best.” Alexandra Eala crashed out in the last 16 as the Philippine history-maker suffered a battling straight-sets defeat to Diana Shnaider. The Russian world number 13 won 7-5, 6-4 and will face the talented American teenager Iva Jovic in the quarter-finals. The 21-year-old Eala in August became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA title and is typically followed by a throng of fans from her country. But after beating France’s Diane Parry in straight sets in the previous round in Ningbo, the world number 20 came up against a far sterner test in Shnaider. The 22-year-old Russian, who is seeking to win a sixth WTA singles title, used her superior power to take the first set in just over 50 minutes. The second set was closer as Eala fought for survival. Shnaider put the Eala serve under severe pressure in the ninth game before breaking for 5-4, then doggedly held to seal victory in one hour and 55 minutes. The 18-year-old Jovic defeated two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-4, 6-3. [...]

Saudi Aramco tells staff to evacuate Dhahran as clashes with Yemen's Houthis continue

Saudi Aramco tells staff to evacuate Dhahran as clashes with Yemen's Houthis continue

Saudi state oil company Aramco has told staff to evacuate its headquarters in Dhahran on the Gulf, six people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Thursday, as fighting between the world’s largest crude exporter and Yemen’s Houthis intensifies. Clashes between the Houthis and Yemen’s government have raged since the group pushed towards Bab el-Mandeb, a shipping chokepoint at the Red Sea’s mouth. The instruction to staff to evacuate the building and work remotely follows a wave of Houthi attacks on the kingdom, targeting the company and Saudi airports. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what would be the first evacuation since the start of the Iran war. It was unclear what the reason for the evacuation was. The kingdom’s benchmark index dropped 2.5% on Thursday following the Aramco news, according to LSEG data. Oil prices rose to their highest since May on Thursday on concern over an escalation of the Middle East conflict and its impact on crude oil supplies from the world’s key exporting region. Houthis say they targeted Aramco in Yanbu Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised speech that the group had launched attacks on Aramco facilities in the Red Sea city of Yanbu and the Saudi defense ministry in the capital Riyadh. Saudi authorities did not confirm the attack. The Saudi-led coalition said on Thursday it had intercepted drones over Riyadh and Islam’s holy city of Medina, which is near Yanbu. The renewed fighting between Saudi Arabia and Houthi militias in recent weeks ended a 2022 UN-brokered truce, which had largely halted cross-border attacks, and opened another front in the US-Israeli war on Iran. The Houthis caused extensive damage to Aramco’s headquarters earlier this month when they struck the building, with fire spreading across several floors. Saudi Arabia has responded to Houthi attacks with a wave of strikes on missile launcher sites, vowing to protect the kingdom, and says it has intercepted many ballistic missiles fired by the group. Saree said that Saudi attacks on Yemen have killed and wounded 562 people since mid July, when the Houthis imposed a naval blockade on the kingdom which then drew a warning from the Saudi-led coalition that it would respond “firmly”. Separately, he said earlier on Thursday that the group is rescuing a boat carrying 14 Indians that was attacked off Jabal Zuqar island near the strait, one of the territories the group seized in an advance in September. Saree blamed the attack on Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. Houthi airport attacks A Houthi attack on King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s eastern oil hub of Dammam near Dhahran on Wednesday evening killed two people, a Saudi citizen and an Indian national, and wounded eight others. Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said on Thursday that operations at the airport had resumed and air traffic had returned to normal. The Houthis had warned airlines this month against using Saudi airspace as they have repeatedly targeted Saudi airports, including Riyadh’s international airport and the southern airport of Abha. Brent crude futures climbed $3.06, or 2.81%, to $111.88 a barrel by 1104 GMT on Thursday. They hit $112.55 a barrel earlier in the session, the highest since May 18. [...]
