South Korean shares surge 4.1% as chip stocks recover

South Korean shares surge 4.1% as chip stocks recover

SEOUL: South Korea’s KOSPI staged a sharp recovery on Wednesday morning, surging 4.1% in the first 30 minutes of trading after a nearly 10% plunge a day earlier, as retail investors rushed to buy the dip. The KOSPI gained more than 330 points to 8,550.21 only moments after trading began at 0000 GMT, with SK Hynix gaining 5% and market bellwether Samsung Electronics jumping more than 9%. The rebound instantly recouped a massive chunk of the previous session’s double-digit losses as retail investors flooded the order books, said Seo Sang-young, a strategist at Mirae Asset Securities Co. “Retail investors going into leveraged ETFs is what is driving this volatility, as many were waiting for chances to go into the market out of FOMO (Fear of missing out),” Seo said. “More volatilities are ahead, as Micron is due to report earnings soon while the US is waiting for inflation and jobs data.” Hyundai Motor and sister automaker Kia Corp were up 1.66% and 1.97%, respectively. Steelmaker POSCO Holdings added 0.93%, while drugmaker Samsung BioLogics rose 2.04%. The KOSPI has risen 102.96% so far this year. The won has weakened 6.2% against the dollar so far this year. In money and debt markets, September futures on 3-year treasury bonds lost 0.04 point to 102.99. The most liquid 3-year Korean treasury bond yield rose by 1.1 basis points to 3.783%, while the benchmark 10-year yield rose by 0.6 basis points to 4.184%. Foreigners were net sellers of shares worth 626.3 billion won. [...]

JGBs hold steady as market weighs timing of BOJ hikes, demand at debt sales

TOKYO: Japanese government bonds held steady on Wednesday as investors weighed the timing of further central bank rate hikes and demand at debt auctions.  Here are a few details: The benchmark 10-year JGB yield slid 0.5 basis point to 2.670%. The five-year yield added 0.5 bp to 1.920%, marking a five-day streak of gains, the longest such run since May 20. Yields move inversely to bond prices. Demand at a sale of 5-year JGBs on Tuesday was seen as relatively weak. The Ministry of Finance will hold a sale of 20-year bonds on Thursday. “While the decline in crude oil prices will provide support for the market, amid adjustments ahead of tomorrow’s 20-year bond auction and lingering caution regarding the Bank of Japan’s rate hikes, the market is likely to struggle to sustain gains,” Takayuki Miyajima, senior economist at Sony Financial Group, said in a note. A summary of opinions from the BOJ’s June meeting showed some board members called for further rate increases. Government plans for tax cuts and increased spending on targeted economic sectors have also stoked concerns about the nation’s finances. “As the debate on tax cuts progresses, it seems that quite a few market participants are concerned that, despite the fall in crude oil prices, the yen is gradually weakening and long-term interest rates are likely to remain elevated,” Keisuke Tsuruta, a senior bond strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, wrote in a note. The yield on the 40-year JGB, Japan’s longest tenor, rose 1 bp to 3.77%.‑Reuters [...]

Japan's Nikkei extends fall on Fed rate-hike, tech valuation concerns

TOKYO: Japan’s Nikkei share gauge fell for a second day on Wednesday, as concerns over potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and valuations in the AI sector weighed on sentiment. The benchmark Nikkei 225 slid 0.56% to 69,396.61, retreating further from a record high reached on Monday. The broader Topix slipped 0.31% to 3,977.91. The decline followed overnight losses in US equities, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index sank 7.9% amid worries about debt-funded AI spending and tighter financial conditions. “Speculation that the Federal Reserve is moving toward interest rate hikes has heightened concerns about rising financing costs for AI capital expenditures, which appears to have accelerated the decline in semiconductor stocks,” Sony Financial Group analysts said in a note. There were 113 advancers on the Nikkei 225 against 111 decliners and one unchanged. Chip-related shares were among the laggards, with Tokyo Electron dropping 3.6% and Disco losing 4.3%. Insurance stocks also fell sharply, led by T&D Holdings, which slid 3.7%. On the upside, retail shares gained, with J. Front Retailing surging 6.3%. [...]

Australian shares extend early gains as May headline inflation cools

Australian shares extended early gains on Wednesday, led by financials and tech stocks after data showing headline inflation cooled in May supported sentiment even as higher-than-expected core inflation brought interest rate hikes back on the radar. The S&P/ASX 200 index rose as much as 0.4% to 8,823.2 by 0203 GMT. Before the data, the index was up 0.2%. The benchmark closed 0.3% lower on Tuesday. Australian consumer prices fell in May as fuel costs and holiday travel eased, data showed on Wednesday. However, core inflation rose 0.4%, above forecasts of 0.3%, igniting worries about further interest rate hikes. The Reserve Bank of Australia paused its tightening cycle in June after three consecutive hikes after economic growth slowed in the first quarter and unemployment ticked up in April. It had cautioned that another increase remained on the table should inflation require further restraining. On the bourse, technology stocks climbed 4%, led by a 13% charge in WiseTech Global and a 7% rise in Xero. The index fell more than 4% on Tuesday. Financials rose 0.6%, extending its gains after the inflation data. All the “Big Four” banks traded in the green. The defensive health sector added 2.3% with CSL , once Australia’s priciest stock, rising over 3%. Market participants also await employment data, due on Thursday. On the other end of the bourse, miners fell 0.7% to their lowest level in more than a week, tracking Tuesday’s fall in iron ore prices to multi-month lows on prospects of rising shipments from major suppliers and seasonally sagging steel demand. Energy stocks weakened over 1% after oil prices fell further overnight as tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz picked up. Woodside Energy and Santos both fell over 1.5%. In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index slipped 0.2% to 13,409.69. [...]

Oil extends slide on expectations of smoother crude flows via Hormuz

SINGAPORE: Oil prices fell more than 1% on Wednesday, extending this week’s losses and trading near four-month lows, on signs that more oil tankers stranded in the Gulf are set to move out of the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures fell 78 cents, or 1.0%, at $76.30 a barrel as of 0350 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate slipped 78 cents, or 1.1%, to $72.43 a barrel. Both benchmarks settled down around 1% on Tuesday, touching their lowest levels since early March. “Positive signals from the Persian Gulf are fuelling optimism about oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Vessel crossings increased in recent days, although they remain well below pre-war levels,“ ING commodity strategists said in a note on Wednesday. Prices have also come under pressure this week after Washington granted Tehran a 60-day sanctions waiver following initial peace talks, allowing it to sell oil, and as hostilities in Lebanon eased. “Crude oil prices were weighed down by hopes of easing US-Iran tensions and a recovery in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz,” said Tomomichi Akuta, senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting. “Further progress in nuclear negotiations could push prices back to pre-war levels,” he added. On Tuesday, Oman and Iran agreed to press on with discussions about the future administration of navigation in the Strait. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said any Iranian attempt to levy transit fees would violate international law. Still, uncertainty remains over the durability of the accord. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran had agreed to nuclear inspections into “infinity,” while Tehran said it had made no such concession in negotiations. Investors are also watching how quickly Middle Eastern producers can restore exports and whether more ships will enter the region. An Iranian military source told Fars news agency that a limited number of vessels are being allowed to pass through the strait each day under coordination with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy. Ship-tracking data showed that three stranded supertankers passed through the strait on Tuesday. The UN shipping agency said an evacuation plan to enable hundreds of ships with 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf to sail through the strait is underway after the US-Iran ceasefire deal. Meanwhile, crude stocks fell by 765,000 barrels in the week ended June 19, market sources said, citing data from the American Petroleum Institute released on Tuesday. Nine analysts polled by Reuters estimated, on average, that crude inventories fell by about 4.5 million barrels in the last week.  ‑Reuters [...]

Aluminium near 3-month low on Gulf supply hopes, strong dollar

Aluminium near 3-month low on Gulf supply hopes, strong dollar

SINGAPORE: Aluminium prices stayed near a three-month low on the London Metal Exchange on Wednesday, as a strong dollar and hopes of a resumption in Middle East supply weighed. LME benchmark three-month aluminium edged up 0.17% to $3,238 a metric ton by 0300 GMT, after having plunged in the previous session. The most-traded aluminium contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange lost 1.12% to 23,480 yuan ($3,453.50) a ton. Earlier in the session, it fell to a three-month low of 23,320 yuan a ton. Hopes of easing tensions between the US and Iran led to expectations that supply from the Middle East, which normally accounts for 9% of global primary aluminium smelting capacity, could gradually resume after three months of war. The LME cash-to-three-month premium was in a slight contango at $-3.46 a ton on Tuesday, suggesting an improvement in immediate availability of supply. The US dollar climbed for a fifth day, supported by safe-haven buying, and made the full base metals complex, which is traded in the greenback, more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Fears of higher-for-longer interest rates amid stubbornly high inflation rates and a more hawkish US Federal Reserve remained a macroeconomic headwind, and a tech-led equity selloff on Tuesday clouded growth hopes. Higher interest rates make borrowing more expensive and dampen demand sentiment for metals tied to economic growth. Copper edged up by 0.16% on the LME but fell 0.98% on the SHFE. The red metal benefited in recent years from forecasts of strong demand for AI infrastructure, grid investment and electric vehicles. Among other LME metals, zinc dipped 0.06%, lead ticked 0.08% higher, nickel ticked 0.1% higher and tin lost 0.86%. On SHFE, zinc dropped 1.72%, lead dipped 0.31%, nickel dropped 1.99% and tin dropped 4.84%. [...]

China's yuan slides to one-month low as dollar extends gains

HONG KONG: China’s yuan slid to a one-month low against the US dollar on Wednesday, pressured by a stronger greenback as investors positioned for potential Federal Reserve rate hikes. The US dollar reached a fresh 13-month high against major currencies on risk-averse sentiment amid a tech selloff and expectations of US rate hikes later this year. The onshore yuan touched 6.8004 per dollar in morning trade, the weakest level in more than a month. The currency is on track for six days of losses against the greenback.  Its offshore counterpart also eased to a one-month low. In the short term, people are worried about Fed hikes and that higher interest rates could have a bigger impact on the yuan, said Kevin Liu, chief offshore China and overseas strategist at CICC Research. The dollar has been supported as markets adjusted expectations for a more hawkish stance from the Fed under new Chairman Kevin Warsh. The selloff in semiconductor stocks also made the dollar, which is seen as a safe-haven currency, stronger. Before the market opened, the People’s Bank of China set the yuan’s midpoint rate at 6.8195 per dollar, its weakest since June 8 and 282 pips weaker than a Reuters estimate. The spot yuan is allowed to trade 2% on either side of the fixed midpoint each day. Despite the pressure from the dollar, analysts believe the yuan will continue to outperform among Asian currencies due to the currency’s resilience in the wake of the US-Israeli war on Iran and China’s robust exports. The yuan is down 0.5% against the dollar this month, but is 2.9% firmer this year. “The main support for the currency since last year has been exports, the broad direction should remain unchanged, but the pace may be affected by the Federal Reserve,” Liu said. Barclays analysts also expect the pace of the yuan’s appreciation to slow in the coming months, citing policy pushback from the central bank through weaker-than-expected fixings, as well as slower dollar conversions by exporters. Kenya signs $1.2 billion deal with Chinese firm to expand Nairobi airport

NAIROBI: Kenya’s government has signed a 154.2 billion Kenyan shilling ($1.2 billion) agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation to expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Transport Minister Davis Chirchir said on Tuesday. The East African nation plans to nearly triple the annual passenger capacity at the Nairobi airport to 22 million people from 7.5 million. The project was previously halted last year after Kenya cancelled a 2024 agreement with India’s Adani Group following the indictment of its founder in the United States. “The project scope includes the construction of a new terminal building and associated support facilities, the modernization and upgrading of existing infrastructure, the improvement of airside and landside operations,” Chirchir said on his X account. Iran president holds talks with Kenya’s Ruto Kenya is aiming to maintain its role as a regional aviation hub as countries such as Ethiopia and Rwanda invest heavily in new airport construction to attract airlines and travellers. Last week, Chirchir said the government had appointed Africa’s Trade and Development Bank and the Africa Finance Corporation to arrange financing for the project. [...]

China, Hong Kong stocks mixed as investors digest tech selloff

HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong stocks were largely flat in a volatile session on Wednesday, while investors were seen buying tech shares after the previous day’s global selloff. China’s blue-chip CSI300 Index edged up 0.1% by the lunch break, while the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.25%. Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng was largely flat. On Tuesday, technology and semiconductor stocks sold off, with South Korea’s Kospi plunging nearly 10%. The big falls in tech stocks without any major catalyst are “another illustration of rising volatility in these stocks, a result of what increasingly looks like frothy earnings expectations and/or valuations,” said James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, in a note. By sector, semiconductors and healthcare rebounded the most in the morning session, with CSI semiconductor index and Hong Kong listed biotech firms advancing 3% each. Real estate and software stocks underperformed, losing 3.5% and 2.5% respectively. Some analysts remain upbeat about the AI cycle. We see recent market volatility as a cooling-down rather than a turning point, said Huaan Securities analysts in a note. This correction presents a good opportunity for investors to add AI industry chain positions, they added. Meanwhile, the yuan slid to one-month low on Wednesday, pressured by a stronger greenback as investors positioned for potential Federal Reserve rate hikes. The smaller Shenzhen index was down 0.15%, the start-up board ChiNext Composite index was higher by 0.42% and Shanghai’s tech-focused STAR50 index was up 2.48%. Around the region, MSCI’s Asia ex-Japan stock index was weaker by 0.40% while Japan’s Nikkei index was down 1.17%. ‑Reuters [...]

Index-heavy stocks, including KE, MARI, OGDC, POL, PPL, HBL, MCB, NBP and UBL, traded in the green. On Tuesday, the PSX remained under pressure as investors stayed cautious amid uncertainty surrounding regional geopolitical developments, while profit-taking and other index-heavy sectors extended losses for a second consecutive session. The benchmark KSE-100 Index closed in the red, shedding 778.95 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 177,692.92 points. Internationally, Asian stocks were wobbly on Wednesday, a day after a global selloff in technology and semiconductor shares, ‌with analysts cautioning about the risk of renewed volatility. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was down 0.02%. South Korean shares, which plunged 10% on Tuesday in their sharpest one-day drop since March, jumped 2.2%, while Japan’s Nikkei was swinging between gains and losses, last down 0.8%. Risk-off sentiment swept Wall Street overnight, tracking moves in Europe and Asia. U.S. stocks fell on concerns about rising debt-funded AI spending and speculation that the Federal Reserve could adopt a more hawkish stance, while Treasury yields declined as investors sought the safety of government debt. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.09%, the S&P 500 fell 1.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.2%. The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes fell 1.41 basis points to 4.493%. SEOUL: A board member of the Bank of Korea, Hwang Kun-il, said the central ‌bank would more closely monitor financial stability risks such as household debt and leveraged stock investments. Here are some details: “There are worries about household debt growth rising again as house prices continue to increase in the Seoul area and leveraged asset investments grow,” Hwang said in remarks released with the central bank’s semi-annual financial stability report. The central bank needs to be ‌wary of the possibility of growing inequality becoming a potential financial stability risk, Hwang said. Indian rupee to slide after dollar powers to over 1-year high on Fed hike bets, risk-off

Indian rupee to slide after dollar powers to over 1-year high on Fed hike bets, risk-off

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is set to decline at Wednesday’s open, with the dollar at a more-than-one-year high on Federal Reserve rate hike expectations and safe-haven demand. The Indian rupee is expected to open in ‌the 94.80 to 94.85 range on Wednesday, traders said, after settling at 94.7350 per U.S. dollar on Tuesday. The currency’s recovery, aided by lower oil prices and central bank steps, has run into headwinds this week on the back of rising expectations that the Fed will hike rates at its September meeting. The U.S. central bank struck a much more hawkish tone at last week’s policy meeting, prompting analysts to revise their rate outlook, shifting from expectations of no hikes to pencilling in one or two increases this year. The rupee has come under pressure recently despite oil prices extending their decline, with signs that more tankers stranded in the Gulf are set to move through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude is quoting below $77 per barrel, taking its losses for the month to about 16.5%. For the rupee, it’s ‌quite evident that oil is no longer the primary driver, a currency trader at a bank said. “What is happening to the dollar and the episodes of risk-off we are seeing in Asia and the U.S. are now more of a catalyst,” the trader said. From a flows perspective, conditions are improving to an extent for the rupee, the trader said, citing a pickup in foreign debt inflows and a slowdown in equity outflows. Dollar on the march The dollar index extended its rally with investors seeking shelter from a technology shares sell-off and positioning for potential Fed rate hikes. The index was at 101.44, its highest since May last year, and is up about 2.5% this month. FX is “a relative game”, and the dollar may continue to strengthen if U.S. rate expectations remain high, MUFG Bank said in a note. [...]

Indian shares likely to open muted as US rate hike bets offset oil relief

Indian shares likely to open muted as US rate hike bets offset oil relief

Indian shares are likely to open little changed on Wednesday, as a fall in crude prices amid U.S.-Iran peace negotiations is tempered by growing expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy. GIFT Nifty futures were at 23,861.50 as of 7:58 a.m. IST, indicating ‌the Nifty 50 could open near the close of 23,824.10 points on Tuesday, when Indian blue-chips fell about 1.2%, dragged by heavyweight IT and metal stocks. Shares had gained more than 4% in the previous seven sessions through Monday, as the Middle East peace talks pushed down crude oil prices, improving the growth and inflation outlook for the world’s No. 3 oil importer and consumer. Wall Street equities fell overnight as a broad selloff in technology and semiconductor shares, profit-taking after a prolonged rally, and expectations of a more hawkish Fed weighed. Asian markets rose 0.4% after losing about 3.8% in the previous session. Higher U.S. interest rates dent the relative appeal of emerging markets such as India for foreign investors and could cloud the growth outlook in the world’s largest economy, weighing on sectors exposed to the United States. Brent crude futures fell 0.5%, trading near four-month lows, on signs that more oil tankers stranded in the Gulf since the start of the Iran ‌war are set to move out of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign portfolio investors net bought Indian shares worth 178.6 million rupees ($1.9 million) on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors purchased stocks worth 6.80 billion rupees. Lower crude prices, along with measures to stabilise the rupee and boost foreign inflows, have helped moderate overseas selling over the past two weeks, two traders said. A revival in monsoon showers and improving earnings could also lure back global investors, who have sold a record $29.84 billion worth of Indian equities so far this year, they said. [...]

Gold slips as Fed rate-hike expectations buoy dollar

Gold extended losses on Wednesday, as bets on US interest rate hikes lifted the dollar, while investors assessed conflicting signals on the US-Iran peace talks. Spot gold ‌fell 0.5% to $4,087.68 per ounce by 0116 GMT, hitting its lowest level since June 11. U.S. gold futures for August delivery declined 1.1% to $4,105.40. The dollar hit a more than one-year high, making bullion more expensive for overseas buyers. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran had agreed to nuclear inspections into “infinity,” while Tehran said it had made no such concession in negotiations, raising questions about the viability of their fragile peace deal. Traders are pricing in three interest rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve this year, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Investors await the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures data, the Fed’s preferred ‌inflation gauge, due on Thursday, for further cues on monetary policy. Dubai’s commodities exchange will launch a same-day settlement gold contract, its CEO told Reuters, aiming to tap safe-haven demand and faster trading infrastructure to boost liquidity in the emirate’s bullion market. Ghana’s Gold Board is aligning its gold pricing regime with internationally recognised LBMA benchmarks from July 1 while imposing strict caps on purchase prices to tighten market discipline and curb irregular trading, it said on Tuesday. Spot silver fell 1.1% to $61.36 per ounce, platinum lost 0.9% to $1,637.34, and palladium was down 1.2% at $1,223.29. [...]

McCullum dismisses talk of rift with Stokes ahead of third New Zealand Test

England coach Brendon McCullum has dismissed speculation of a rift with Test captain Ben Stokes, saying he was amused by suggestions their relationship had soured. Stokes is set to return for the third Test against New Zealand, which begins on ‌Thursday, alongside fast bowler Gus Atkinson following the conclusion of a disciplinary hearing. The pair were suspended from the second Test after a curfew breach at a London nightclub and were reportedly present when a member of England’s security staff was involved in an incident with a Saracens rugby player following England’s first-Test win. In Stokes’ absence, England suffered a 253-run defeat at The Oval on Sunday as New Zealand levelled the series. McCullum, who had also faced questions about his relationship with Stokes after a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, said on Tuesday there was no substance to the reports. “I said, ‘Do you know where this has come from, the conversations around our relationship over the last six months?’ He said, ‘No, I have no idea’. I said to him, ‘As far as I’m concerned, I consider you a good friend’,” McCullum told reporters. Afghanistan defeat champions England in seismic World Cup shock “Obviously we’ve been through a lot together as a ‌working pair in leadership positions here in English cricket. In the end, we both want what’s right and what is the best for English cricket.” McCullum has worked closely with Stokes since taking over the Test side in 2022, forming a partnership that reshaped England’s approach to red-ball cricket. He added that recent setbacks would not derail the team’s progress. “It’s been a real privilege for me over the past four years to work in intimate detail and as a partnership alongside Ben,” he said. “I look back on that fondly about how tight we were as a group and how tight we were as a pair. Anything outside of that, it’s not really up to us. Ben and I are tight.” England will look to clinch the series in the third test at Trent Bridge, with their last test series victory coming 18 months ago against New Zealand in 2024.

Bosnia plan to attack in must-win Qatar game, coach Barbarez says

SEATTLE: Bosnia and Herzegovina plan to play a more offensive game when they face Qatar in a must-win game to keep their World Cup hopes alive, coach Sergej Barbarez said on Tuesday. The two sides play on Wednesday knowing they realistically must win to progress, after Bosnia’s opening draw with co-hosts Canada was followed by a chastening defeat by Switzerland in Group B. A draw would put Bosnia and Qatar on two points, surely not enough to qualify in third place, and Barbarez predicted the high stakes would make for an entertaining contest. “For us, it’s never our goal to defend for 90 minutes,” Barbarez told a group of largely Bosnian reporters. “There are always phases of the game when… you let the opponent play.” “It’s not going to be a match of long balls and defending,” he added. “It will be two teams that will have to fight to win.” Bosnia expect to be well supported by their fans, who have been visible in large numbers in Seattle this week. Qatar, though, are also set to have a large contingent in the stadium, with sections of Seattle Stadium already marked with Qatari flags on Tuesday evening. David hat-trick as Canada crush nine-man Qatar 6-0 to earn first World Cup finals win The European side go into the game as favourites and victory would most likely set up a last-32 clash against co-hosts the United States. But Barbarez said Bosnia, playing in their second World Cup having been eliminated in the group stage in 2014, had to be wary of their opponents. “Us being or not being favourites to win the match will not change our approach,” he said. “Looking at FIFA’s ranking, Qatar should be the favourite. They are better ranked than us, so we need to pay attention.” “Form can beat quality sometimes,” Barbarez concluded. [...]

Croatia scorer Budimir hails win over Panama that keeps hopes alive

TORONTO: Croatia’s match-winner Ante Budimir rejoiced in their 1-0 victory against Panama at the World Cup and hoped they would learn the right lessons as they stayed in contention to progress. Croatia beat a battling Panama side at the Toronto stadium on Tuesday in a game neither side could afford to lose after both teams started their campaigns with a defeat. Croatia’s win courtesy of a second-half goal from substitute Budimir kept alive their hopes of reaching the Round of 32. “… so there we have started in this tournament and hope we draw the right lessons and continue to build on this victory,” Budimir told reporters. Croatia, who lost 4-2 to England in their World Cup opener, are third in Group L on three points before facing a stubborn Ghana side on Saturday in Philadelphia. England lead on four points above Ghana on goal difference. Messi and Alvarez fire Argentina past Croatia into World Cup final “I am happy that I secured my first goal at the World Cup, it is important for us to start winning and get back to the team we were before,” Budimir said. Croatia’s Luka Modric, 40, played his 200th international and was thrown in the air by his teammates after the match. Budimir explained that it was nice to enjoy such milestones with a celebration, especially when the team win. “We are grateful to have a captain like Luka - a great player and a great person,” Budimir added. Russian-held Sevastopol, Moscow-controlled parts of Ukraine's Kherson grabble with power outages

The city of Sevastopol in Russia-annexed Crimea and Moscow-held parts of the Ukrainian region of Kherson were facing power outages on Wednesday, the Kremlin-installed authorities said, adding to fuel shortages as Kyiv intensifies attacks. Sevastopol, the biggest city on the Crimea peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014, was left with no power after Ukraine attacked energy facilities there, Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city’s Russian-installed governor, said on Telegram. Sevastopol was under drone attack, he said earlier on Wednesday, and the nearby Russian-held parts of Ukraine’s Kherson region were also partially or fully cut off from power, the Moscow-installed Governor Vladimir Saldo said separately. Saldo did not provide further details. Kyiv has intensified strikes on the supply routes for Crimea, triggering curbs on public activities in the wake of a fuel supply crisis. Ukraine drone attack kills one in Russia: governor Trolleybuses in Sevastopol will not be operating on Wednesday, Razvozhayev said, as he also asked parents to keep children at home. Russia’s Orenburg region, more than 1,000 km (621 miles) southeast of Moscow, has downed a number of drones over an industrial facility, Governor Yevgeny Solntsev said on Telegram, without providing details. It was not immediately clear whether any damage occurred in the remote region, which borders Kazakhstan and is also home to a number of industrial facilities including a gas processing plant and an oil refinery. In Russia’s border Belgorod region, a man was killed and a woman was injured in a drone attack, local authorities said. Ukraine strikes kill three in Russia-annexed Crimea Additionally, Russian shelling of the eastern Ukrainian city of Balakliia killed one person on Wednesday, local authorities said on Telegram. Reuters could not independently verify the details of the latest strikes. [...]

Qatar to resume normal liquefied natural gas production 'within a few weeks', PM tells FT
